Rear End Noise

I have a 2007 X5 Diesel without Adaptive Drive/Sports Suspension....when driving at low speeds a distinctive "ticking" type sound can be heard and it appears to be coming from rear suspension / wheels... You can only hear it with windows open and when driving in a garage or near a building... it's a sound almost like a thin metal strip is attached to the tire..as it is repetitive and definitely related to wheel rotation as it is quicker at higher speeds..Anyone experience anything similar .. mentioned it al last service... and they said they could find nothing...

I have this too -- interested to see if anyone knows the cause of it.

Is it more apparent when turning? I have a similar noise and was told it was the E-brake shoe? anyone know where/what that is?

A good test to establish that would be gently apply the parking brake whilst rolling slowly.

I'll try that. is the e-brake shoe located by the rear right tire? cuz thats where most of the noise is coming from.

I think it could be related to the metal cover / Shroud that sits behind the disk brake.. got under the car and moved it and it seemd to make a similar sound... the sound is definitely related to wheel revolutions ... will take it in when I get a chance...

I found out what my issue was and it's very embarassing .. took it to the dealer .. yes the noise was there .. seemd more at the front when I sat in the passenger side during a road test... get a call that afternoon... the front wheel lock nut was missing (!) and some of the other wheel bolts were loose causing the noise... I had it at the dealer in December for a service..I can only say that something happened then... and haven't touched the wheel since then... they replaced all the wheel lock bolts and did not charge a thing... btw i Had a X3 loaner 2.0d... wow I love my X5 even more now....

Embarassing for the service staff I think. Real amateurs.

check your tire treads for rocks as well. Sometimes a rock wedged in the treads will cause this kind of noise....
