Hey Craig...

don't know if your x is garaged or not but it's getting cold out and wondered if you had any starting problems or fuel gel problems yet?? Hope you haven't had any and are really liking your x.

Hi Gene, yes, it's cold here and no problems to report with either the X5 diesel or it's fuel. I have it garaged, but I will be out tomorrow in the cold. It's going to be cold tonight, tomorrow and tomorrow night, so this should be a good test if I'm going to have cold weather problems. The premium diesel I'm using is tested to -22 for it's pour point. Regular diesel is tested to -16 is what I've found out from talking to oil distributors around here. I did check my mileage when I filled up the other day. 16.1 MPG in the city. That was just after only using a 1/4 tank of fuel. I will let you know if I have any problems in the cold weather...

Oh, I forgot, I really like the X and the diesel engine...

Craig....when you have a chance, please do 2 hours or so on the freeway at 70 mph and report the gas mileage. I would expect close to 30 mpg. Thanks.

When I took it home, I did 80 on the highway for about 110 miles. The computer showed 21.9 MPG. Next time I take a trip in it, I will post the mileage.

Gene, I took my car out this moring it was -4 with a wind chill of -20.
My car sat outside at the gym for over an hour and I had no problems.
It started right up. I'm going out later and it's going to warm up to +8
today. It's going down to -5 again over night. If I have any problems,
I will let you know. The urea freezes at +12, but one of the tanks is
heated.

The motor doesn't break in for 10k miles or so. I wouldn't expect any BMW to attain spectacular consumption figures until then.

Yeah, the shop foreman told me 5-6 K for break in. It doesn't help that it really cold here now as well. No problems to report using the diesel in the cold weather today.

 Good to hear you have had no problems with the cold. Early hours still, but still good to hear. Sidenote: your vehicle only feels absolute temperature, not windchill.

Not surprised by your mileage. It is a new, tight engine. You are using winter fuel. Most importantly, the expectations for higher mileage are based on imperial gallons, not US gallons. Please let us know how it goes as it gets broken in.

Thanks, I will let everyone know my mileage as well as any problems... I just watched a new BMW commercial on TV showing how the diesel gets twice the mileage as a gas engine.

It's going down to -5 tonight. It was -4 this morning when I went out...

Craig
