X5 3.0 Exhaust Tip Changes - E70

Hello...

I've read several different threads but haven't come up with an answers yet...I am finding coinflicting information (I always search before asking)

Can you, or can you not...buy the 4.8 tips and easily install them on a 3.0???

Thanks in advance.

No, it's not just the tips you can buy. They come with about 40cm of exhaust pipe too meaning that you need to cut the existing carefully and then weld the new sections on.

yep. I have to confrim on Fastbucks reply. The 3.0 tips have to be cut off and new 4.8 tips screwed on with a O ring, but better to have it welded over as well....
4.8 tips are easily to be ordered at BMW as a spare parts

Just had my 4.8 tips installed last week. No need to weld them on. I will post pics shortly.

yes, no need to weld the on. The OEM parts comes with clamps and screws but as I said it is better to have them welded.... I've heard some people saying the bolds come loose as there is obviously a lot of vibration going on.
I asked the service for a welding so they did with no prob. Now I don't have to worry about parts falling off :))

Can i pls get a part number? I am looking to replace my stock 4.8 tips with the same ones but i plan to powdercoat them black. I was of the understanding that you cant order the tips because they are part of the whole muffler. Please advise.

Thx very much

I would be a little hesitant switching to the 4.8 tips. I have a 2007 4.8 and the black powder coating inside the tips starting wearing off. The dealers in Atlanta thought up all kinds of excuses before one of them agreed to "scrape off" all the powder coating. None would agree to replace the tips because to do so would involve replacing the entire muffler etc (b/c of welding). While this issue appears to be isolated it is not uncommon. Ironically, the tips now look better than the originials (stainless vs. black powder coat).

did you get those tips from dealer or else where?
