Deep scratches
 

So my baby got a deep scratch from the wife closing the garage door on it. It has completely taken off the paint and when you run your fingers across, you feel the indentation. The scratch runs about 3 inches, stops and then another one runs for about 2 inches.

Anyone with a clue how much this is going to cost me to get fixed? It's under the rear glass by the roundel emblem

my sister did the same on her hubby's car first day he got it!

First off, I hope your wife "properly apologizes" for this one.

It's hard to estimate the cost. Maybe a grand?

I have some bad news.
The the whole tailgate needs to be painted. Then the paint needs to be blended with the sides. All the hardware needs to be removed from the tailgate (including the glass). New emblems need to be put on after the job is done.
To do it right (indistinguishable from the original, with just the right amount of orange peel in the paint), you're looking at about 3K.
I am a part owner of a body shop that does show car work, Barrett-Jackson cars etc.
You can have it done much cheaper, but the quality will go down accordingly.
The best way to do it, is to report it to the insurance, take it to the best body shop in town (the one your BMW dealer is using), pay the deductible, and deal with a possible premium increase. If the insurance company gives you a hard time afterwards, you can always shop for the new policy.

Dr Paint Chip has gotten some good reviews, and some have said it was hard to smear the top coat properly. Answer seems to be practice on something not valuable.

I have no personal experience.

I have a thing about panel painting. I'd rather have a flaw that is made better/less visible than a perfect panel. Unless it is absolutely undetectable, which can be tough as paint ages at different rates, a potential buyer will wonder how bad the damage might have been.
