Retractble headlamp washers

We just purchased a MINT condition CPO 2008 X5 3.0i with only $10,000 miles last week. It has the COLD WEATHER PACKAGE in it and the owners manual says that it has the retractable headlamp washers but 1) we can not figure out where they are and 2) we do not know how to operate them. Can anyone give us any ideas? Thanks

They are right below the headlights. You should see the cut outs pretty easy. They pop out when activated. If I recall they activate when you wash the windshield, but only when the headlights are on. So if the headlights aren't on, the washer fluid will only squirt out on the windshield. I personally don't like the headlight washers becuase the stream is very strong and makes a big mess all over the hood.

On a similar note... anyone know if it is possible to deactivate the headlight washer so that it doesn't spray at night if you activate the windshield washer?

I'd love to know this as well

To me, headlamp washer is a wasted option. I can definitely live without it.

Thanks, guess we won't put the washer on when the headlights are on.

I guess its good thing that I haven't found how to operate. Can certainly live without them!!!

they are kinda cool though.

jgjhhi 02-28-2009 09:05 AM

Do they pop out behind the two little square cut outs below the headlights?

M6X 02-28-2009 09:28 AM

yes

They only activate on every third wash with the headlights on. And even though they do squirt all over the front of the car, they do work very well especially after those snow storms hear in the north. It's amazing to me how dim the headlights can get after being lathered with road salt.

Just wished we can more control over it though. That would be nice.

when you are about to activate windshield fluid just turn off your xenons for a short moment so the lamp washers wont activate.

Tough to do when you're driving at night though and had to clean the windshield.

you can do it while at a stop light. actually i turned off the xenons at night once on a straight dark country road out of curiosity and i could still see the road from the weak illumination from the angel eyes.

All I'm saying is that, it would be very nice feature to have a button or something that activated only the headlamp washing fluids without putting someone in harms way by having to turn off the headlamps. I notice headlamps are only on when critical conditiona is needed, like at night time. Wouldn't an extra button of some sort be nice?

yeah i agree with you. but i guess the Munich guys were high when they made some design features, ie, removing dip stick, placing intake air duct on top of oil filter, crappy back up cam, etc LOL i still like the car in general though but i guess nothing in life is perfect.

dirty headlight covers diffract the Xenonlight more and are therefore more blinding to oncoming traffic. That's why Xenons are allways combined with headlight washers... so turning them off is not the best idea

on my 53, 2004 4.4 the headlight washers just came on about every 4 or 5 times you washed the windshield. Did not come on everytime you hit the washer.:dunno:

If you don't feel comfortable turning off your headlights for a moment then pull off to the side of the road for a moment.

Yes, it would be great to have a independant button for the headlight washers if you like to use them. I think they make more of a mess than they are worth.

I keep a small bottle of eye glass cleaner filled with wiper solution and a micro fiber cloth in compartment under the rear deck. I can clean both headlights pretty quick if they get that bad without drenching the hood.

US models have headlamp washers as part of the cold package, in EU it's mandatory to have them with Xenons

StumpyPete 03-03-2009 05:32 AM

not all countries have Xenons as standard
