Laser Interceptor Install on E70!
I installed the Laser Interceptor on my X5 today. I know a few people have this on here and some were interested. I will get some daytime pictures up tomorrow.
It is the Quad sensor set. Let me know what you think. http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0178.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0179.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0181.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0182.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0183.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0188.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0189.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0193.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0194.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0195.jpg http://i260.photobucket.com/albums/i...r/CIMG0197.jpg |
Good stuff!!!!... how much was it?

I wonder why you need sensors at the back of the car?
anyway, these things are illegal here in Belgium, you can have your car repossessed when busted... |
Looks good. Make sure the heads are level. I assume you cut out the mesh grill on the front a bit? Also how did you run the wires for the rear sensors?

Also, do you have a radar jammer because that next on my list. |
On/Off switch
Nice install however, your on/off switch is upside down. :bustingup
I know, it's your preference.. |
Okay, some constructive criticism for you - Did the dealer have to cut out the mesh grill? Could they not have placed the unit behind it? And did they have to use silver screws, could they not have used black screws??
|
Good stuff... you should of looked up the LPP... more stopping power, less $$$
|
Looks great, I have the same set up. I mounted the switch in the overhead panel tho.
As for some of the comments from others, you were correct to not mount behind the grill as that reduces performance. Also, the LPP is a good unit but the LI has performed similarly especially in light of some who believe the LPP's tested lately were prototypes, and lately the LI rep (at least in the US) has been more reliable. Good luck. |

See the Guys of Lidar, www.guysoflidar.com They seem to be the most "unbiased" of all the testers, tho some take shots at them as well. Also review radar roy and between those 2 u will see others mentioned. As a caution, the 2 big issues are diode vs LED and then the reliability of the manufacturer from whom you buy. I will tell I had the Blinder (LED) and LI (DIODE) and have been happy with both products. The LI is superior however. The 2 reps, Leon and Cliff respectivly are top notch, some of the other manufactures' I dont trust.
Just do some research on the various forums. Good luck. Quote:

You mounted it correctly. It must be unobstructed. behind the grill would severely diminish performance. LI is the way to go just look at the results consistently JTG.

A laser jammer(FDA light) is an entirely new creature.. Radar jammers(RF) will get you jail time here in the US. For the best hands down laser unit... The one I have personally seen work flawless....Jam to the gun type of power.. The LPP is it. Radar Detectors & Laser Pro Park Support Forum - KMPH.ca • Index page |

From what I heard before buying it, LI is the best and nothing competes. I still have to test my LI, but lets hope it works.
Also, like AVATT had mentioned, the customer service of LI is outstanding. Give Cliff a call and he will help you through any questions or problems you encounter. |

I didn't know it was upside down. I'm to lazy to switch it around so its fine the way it is. How do you know the LED goes at the top? In your install you had mentioned something similar to "notice how I did it so the LED is at the top". |
What do you think of this? Its a Radar/Laser scrambler. Im guessing it is something similar to a jammer. They have just the scrambler, or a combo unit with the detector built in. Its pretty cheap to, only $180.

Rocky Mountain is the biggest rip off artist in the business IMO. The one I am talking about comes with the purchase of an F-18. Really, do not waste your money on Rocky Mountain. Also, I think you may want your bubble on your reciever on the inside. You should head over to the LI forum and ask someone there like Ivan about the install.

Which jammer are you talking about that comes with an F-18? And is it F-18 as in the jet? I don't mind spending money but I want it to work. If there is nothing good out that anyone could recommend, I will order a few different ones and see which works. I also tried the LI today with many different lasers, and it didn't detect any of them. I will have to look into this too. |

Scorpion Ultimate Ka may work, but is unreliable and hard to find. You can not run a radar detector with a radar jammer because the jammer would set of the detector all the time. Your best bet would be to get a good radar detector such as the Bel STi-R or the Escort 9500ix, V1 is good but does not offer stealth against spectre units (RDD's).
|
BTW. I would contact Cliff at LaserInterceptorUSA about your problem he is very knowledgeable and can help you trouble shoot if you are in the U.SA.
|
I tested it with the lasers the cops have on the street. I didn't get any notification from the LI that it has detected a laser. I will have to keep trying it out.
Also, I already know where the radar/lasers are because they are built into speed cameras, so I just want a way to be able to peed past them without slowing down. That is why I have no need for a detector and why I have not purchased a V1. I just need a good jammer or something similar to jam the gun so no pictures are taken. I will look into the Scorpion Ultimate. BTW, why would an F-18 need a jammer? And if it is for cars, andy price estimate? |
I have had SOOO many tickets this year that I wouldn't mind spending any amount to get something to work.

Do you know which laser they are using ? I think in Dubai they also use a new technology- Sensys. The radar, I believe, is not use primarily to record speed but rather "track" time between two points. At some point it must take a speed reading to begin the track and I think the primary premise is measured from "point a" to "point b", point 'b" probably being the camera and a calculation is made during the track to determine the time, thus speed one traveled through the zone. This uses a radar lobe . check out Radar Detector Jammer Forum and look in the jammer forum over there. There are way more knowledgeable people over there that could explain more if you ask nicely.

BMWMAN - check out Radar Roy's $50k challenge to RMR. They won't take him up on it for their $180 unit. Bottom line...junk. I bought a K40 radar detector and laser "diffuser" but I have seen mixed reviews. The radar detector portion is GREAT, but the laser jammer goes off and I haven't been pulled over yet. I can't attest to its performance as it has only gone off as I was doing 80 is a 65mph zone with traffic.
As for radar jammers, it was mentioned that they will land you in jail in the US. That is true. FCC doesn't take kindly to those that actively jam radar. Working for a radar development company (for defense applications), I can say that there are jamming technologies that exist, for a price similar to that of systems on expensive aircraft. If you do find a solution though, I would be interested!!! :p: |

I wouldn't mind paying up to $10k for a radar jammer, but I know I will never find a working one. And I want it for Dubai, where they use cameras. In the US, A radar detector (Valentine 1!!) is good enough. |
The LI is the truth. Best lidar jamming product out there. Best reviews/test by far.
It has already saved me a handful of times. Definitely looking to get one for the X5 when it comes in. |

Bubble on the outside. This comes directly from Cliff at LI. I have had several laser jammers over the last 5-6 years. I feel that LI is the best performer and also the most difficult to install if you are adding rear sensors as well as front. They must be straight and level. Also, great customer service from Cliff. Cost in Us is $1,400 plus $500 or so to install. M |

I was just on their site, and it looks like they have a new version 8 out. Do you have version 7 or 8? And the jammer to parking sensor switch seems pretty cool just incase you get stopped. It can also be linked to your V1!? |
I have version 8. didn't know about linking to V1. Will look into it. Didn't go with HP version. Was not tested by anyone at the time I ordered.
|
Not much information on how it links to V1. I see a diagram but what does the connection do. May be using the V1 laser receiver to initiate the jam. If that is the case, I prefer the LI for laser detection rather than the V1. There are far fewer false alarms with LI than V1.

Can someone post a detailed measurement of the size (length x width x depth) and a few pictures of one of the detectors that mounts in the front. I'm curious if one can be somehow embedded in one of the bumper plugs on an E53 X5.

Thanks I saw that, I was just hoping for photos of all sides and the associated measurements to assess if it is a perfect rectangle or not and how the cable comes off it.

Just finished my own install of a basic dual head Laser Interceptor. I'll post some pictures of the installation procedure soon.
BTW, I bought my LI through a group buy on M5board.com at a great price. If anyone is interested, they are still honoring that price. Laser Interceptor Group Buy: Best Pricing Available!!! - The Unofficial BMW M5 Messageboard (m5board.com) |
Excellent information, thanks for sharing. I'm going to add a new thread to the group buy forum for those that might be interested.

Some pictures of my installation:
First I installed the sensors using the included malleable brackets. I actually lost one so I had to improvise with one of the passenger side brackets. I later painted it black to hide it better. I then ran the cables through the driver's side engine compartment and into the area underneath the brake master cylinder. I drilled a hole through the grommet under the driver's side kick panel and ran the cables into the cabin. I ran the power/ground cable under the center console and then tapped the harness to the lighter after removing the carpet panels on both sides of the console. After that, it's just a matter of making all the connections and finding a location for the box with the integrated speaker and for the power switch. I chose to put everything on the kick panel well out of site, but with the power switch easily accessible. http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0146.jpg http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0144.jpghttp://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0145.jpghttp://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0140.jpghttp://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0147.jpghttp://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0148.jpghttp://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0151.jpghttp://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...l/DSC_0152.jpg |
Very nice job. Thanks for sharing. Just curious, did you consider mounting the speaker/control box on that inside of that panel and just have the speaker turned up louder? That way nothing at all would be shown except for the on/off switch.?

I mounted my box under the driver seat. It is easy to access and you can hear the speaker fine, even with music.
Also, you can use an external speaker if you wanted to hide the box but still have a speaker outside. |
