E70 4.8 max speed

Tried it yesterday on a highway and could not reach more than 225km/h (140mph). Is it cause im using 18' all seasons?
The car spec says 240km/h (150mph) but even with slight decline on the highway could not reach it.
Do you know whats the deal?

scoobydoo 03-11-2009 01:46 AM

245-250 km/h

The X5 4.8i with Sport package and 20" wheels will reach 155MPH. Check the BMW web site specs. There's also youtube videos of a guy getting to over 155, but that's due to the speedo reading higher than accurate at the top end.

Top speed for the 4.8 in the U.S. without the 20 inch wheels is 130, not sure about Croatia, but be careful at that speed. It is 150 MPH for the 20 inch wheels here.

I felt it was electronically limited to 220 kmh.
I will try again with the 20's in the summer.
Thanks.

What I meant was that you would have had to buy the car new with the sport package that comes with 20's standard. If you didn't get the sport package, your car is electronically limited at a lower speed of 130 mph. If you did opt for the sport package, then you should be able to hit 150. That is how it is in the U.S. anyway.

If you are running winter tires, you may want to be careful testing max speed. I am not sure what the speed rating is for the particular tire you are running on the 18's.

I just recently hit 150 in my 4.8 with sport package and 20" wheels. Almost felt like it could keep going if i had the room

I am pretty sure that the speed rating form my 18's is abt 220 kmh.
I drive quite often over 200 kmh (120 mph) and it feels safe on our highways.
Since I dont have the sport package (but I have the 20's), is there a way to remove the electronic speed limit. I was disappointed when a Cayenne S passed me.

I think the only way would be performance software and I am not sure what is available for your particular car. Also, if your winter tires are only speed rated to 220 kmh, then you really shouldn't exceed that speed. They simply were not designed for speeds faster than that.

when i saw this thread i took my x5 and went on the highway...top speed: 256km/h, and it`s was slowly growing towards 260km/h but the road was too bad quality....:(that`s how our roads in romania are. But believe me the car runs great. I will take some pictures with top speed and post it, but after a few months because now it`s suffering a visual and mechanical transformation:D

Can you provide more info on that? For what model and with what options? I don't see BMW removing the speed limiter on a vehicle that has tires with a speed rating lower than the new top speed.

I only know of one modern BMW that didn't have a factory set electronic speed limiter and that was a certain year of the e53 4.4 sport. I am not aware of BMW removing the speed limiter on any of it's cars that came with one from the factory.

Bigtop 03-16-2009 08:34 PM

What happens if you have the sport package but got the 19 inch wheels instead? Is it only limited if you did not get the sport package? I have the full sport package but selected the 19" rims because of the mountain winter conditions of where I live.

stefandragnea 03-16-2009 08:41 PM

i have the 2009 x5 4.8ixDrive with the delimiter option selected. I have also sport package with the 20" wheels. The car is fully loaded.

I am curious about the question that Bigtop asked. Can you get the limiter removed if you have anything less than 20 inch wheels? According to BMWUSA, it doesn't sound like it. It says 4.8i is limited at 130 mph (150 mph for optional 20 inch wheels and performance tires). If they aren't going to give you 150 mph without the 20's, there is no way they are going to remove the limiter, right?

Herr Bauhaus 03-16-2009 10:15 PM

I have not heard of European BMW's being speed limited to anything less than 250 km/h. And most German cars limited to 250 run a bit (5-15kmh) faster before the limiter kicks in.

At the same time, some cars allow for a speed limiter to be set based on the speed rating of the tires (Mercedes ML allows this). If your tires are speed rated to 220, any chance this is set up/programmed in your X5?

On YouTube there are movies of people doing 245/250 with the 4.8i and I think/hope any not-limited X5 4.8i should at least go up to its factory stated top speed (150mph/240kmh).

To de-limit a US-spec X5 you probably need to flash/chance the ECU. Most expensive option is to get a 3rd party tuned ECU (Hartge, etc). Least expensive (if possible) is to have your dealer flash the X5's ECU into thinking it has the sports package w/ 20"

yes I do, i`ve also attached a scan to a document that i`ve received when i bought the car, you can see the option list there

y5choi 03-17-2009 11:35 PM

I'm not disagreeing with you but why doesn't the list say Active steering and Adaptive drive? are those not even mentioned but just included in the Sports package?

Thanks

stefandragnea 03-18-2009 03:18 AM

the adaptive drive and active steering are both included in the sport package.

lynstermkiii 03-18-2009 07:26 AM

Sport package included active steering, adaptive drive and comfort seats? In US. Just the comfort seats and active steering cost over 2k. Sport package is a sweet deal in Romania.

Thats what pretty much everyone does, especially if import quotas are not so high.

i have importad all the cars i own from USA, otherwise to get a same loaded car in Europe costs at least 35% more

y5choi 03-18-2009 09:45 AM

This certainly makes sense, but what about for countries that drive on the left-hand side (has right side driver seat)?
