My first error message is a fact

:banghead:
it happened this morning on my way to work
I turn up the on-ramp of the motorway, in the turn I feel some thump at the rear and she wobbles her ass a bit... I immediately hear the feared chime...:yikes: and the following message appears:

http://i40.tinypic.com/5xly0p.jpg

I continued driving, no loss of power or whatever...
when I was able to pull over, I turned the engine off, removed the key and waited for a couple of minutes, started again and drove off without error message

the car has only some 5000kms on it so this is under warranty but all I'll get is probably the 'could not reproduce' comment from the dealer as the message disappeared after shutting down the car...
Any ideas what could have caused this?

StumpyPete 03-20-2009 05:36 AM

I had this error and had to have Xdrive control box replaced.

rh71 03-20-2009 06:42 AM

they may not be able to reproduce but the code should be stored in the computer with more details for them to diagnose.

deutsch100 03-20-2009 10:41 AM

Yeah, what rh71 said is "usually" true. On my '07 & '08 E70, most of the time, the fault codes store themselves. Without explanation why (of course) many times the codes did not store for my many, many, many Service visits. Smart move taking a picture. I used pictures of warning messages many times in the case against my '07 X5. Take a picture of EVERY warning message, because if the code doesn't store, you will have proof for BMW, and your warranty issues!

On a side not...I find it funny that your iDrive is in English. Did you set it that way? Being in Belgium, did it not come standard in Dutch, German or French??

I have had enough error messages to know that I need to take pictures of the error warnings :D
and for the language: the iDrive does come standard in dutch, french and english but I set it in english as all my digital toys are set in english, it just makes more sense to me that way, although I speak dutch myself... My previous E61 came with a french - english - spanish setup... so english was the obvious choice there...:D I just kept it that way in the X5...

Fault codes are always stored in the computer, and when they run a diagnostic, it will show up in their system.

Penguin 03-20-2009 01:18 PM

> Fault codes are always stored in the computer

Well, fault codes are suppose to "always" be stored in the computer, but that function is sometimes faulty as well...

tboy 03-20-2009 02:17 PM

I agree, Penguin. Every couple of months I get a "Dynamic Drive" failure. Upon turning the car off and turning it on again the fault is cleared off the screen. Upon subsequent follow-up at the dealer, I am informed that no codes have been stored. This has happened on several separate occasions and I've had two different dealers look at it with the same result-- no code stored, can't replicate problem.

totally agreed. I had the exact same error message and the dealer was not able to see any fault codes.

If your user name "WannaX5" means you do not have an X5, yet want one...trust us who have one!!! Saying fault codes are always stored is pompous & uninformed. Fault codes are supposed to always be strored in the computer...but after 2 E70s, that is not the case!!!

Calling me pompous and uniformed for my comment means you are either a real a$$ or you need a dictionary. I currently have a 2008 BMW 535i which is in the process of being lemoned. Trust me when I say I have had plenty of fault codes and each and every one has been "stored". The one time when the fault code disappeared from my car before I got it to the dealer it was still stored when they did the diagnostic and the service advisor told me they are always stored. So next time you open your arrogant mouth, why not asking me what my story is or what car I have?

Penguin 03-20-2009 09:33 PM

You are correct, you are not necessarily pompous, merely uninformed, as in the dictionary definition of "If you describe someone as uninformed, you mean that they have very little knowledge or information about a particular situation or subject. "

Wow, you people take this shit way too seriously. Get a life.

Uh, "WannaX5", your original reply only says Location: Los Angeles, and Member. A dictionary?? Huh? Also, how in the hell am I supposed to know/or knew to ask you what kind of car you have, or that you are in the process of a lemon lawsuit? With your username of 'WannaX5', it comes off as someone who wants a BMW (X5) but does not have one. You should have said in my 2008 535i, fault codes are always stored! If you take this attitude, and intelligence into mediation or in a court room for your lemon lawsuit...plan on keeping your 2008 535i.

Penguin 03-21-2009 10:21 AM

> Wow, you people take this shit way too seriously

Actually, I was merely taking your heartfelt advice and consulted the dictionary as you advised in your message. After doing as you requested, and reading the definitions, I posted my message.

Did I do wrong?

If any attorney were to jump to conclusions as you did, I would be sure to win my case. FYI, no need to go to court. All being done through BMW without attorneys. Lemon law is pretty clear and BMW are smart enough to know when they have one. Next time, try not to call someone pompous for merely stating an opinion. Try to correct them nicely as the people before you did. No need to start shit with someone who had no ill intentions in his original post. Imagine if you answered a question the best you could on the 535 board, and for no reason I called you an asshole?

I don't think this was any of your business, and I don't think my "dictionary" post was every directed to you. Now go back to doing your homework like a good little boy.

deutsch100 03-21-2009 02:55 PM

First off WannaX5...Show me one time where I called you an asshole!! You were the one to so eloquently call me an "a$$". I called you pompous and uninformed, and by your subsequent posts, I (and other users) surely stand by my chosen words. Also, the way you attack Penguin, once again affirms that you are pompous & uninformed. I wish you luck with your 535i buyback and life in General, cause wow man...you're gonna need it!
