I recently purchased an original BMW exhaust pipes and I am very disappointed. After a week day, black color within the exhaust pipes started to peel. I immediately reported problem to the authorized service and they have ordered a new exhaust pipes, but it happened the same after a week. Of course I have asked again new exhaust pipes but this time they sad to me that they are not sure that this is their problem because is already the second time happening. I have friend who was at the same time in the same service purchased exhaust pipes for 3.0d like me, and it is not happening. Whatever I am interested if someone has a similar problem with original BMW exhaust pipes

Would it be the corrosive salt on your roads causing the problem?

no chance!!! I installed exhaust pipes after the winter when the roads were dry and clean, and am very careful when I wash the car. In the car service they told me to assume that comes to the overheating and that the black color inside of exhaust pipes burned and waste.

Im driving also 4.8 in Croatia and its not cause of salt. So far I dont have a problem with it.
But mine is gasoline and maybe the diesel would do that.

i dont think so, because I have already written, that my friend took the same exhaust pipes and has the same engine and that it is not happening to him.

Their supplier probably made a bad batch, with poor paint preparation or something, and they're all like that for the moment.

I've just noticed that my right exhaust has this same problem (2007 4.8i). The left one is fine. Since it is a lease, which is up in a few months, I haven't decided whether to get the dealer to fix them.

I think this is a common problem I have the same thing. I was thinking of stripping the rest of the paint off and polish them.

I think I will do the same, although I will try once again to replace them on warranty

I cant tell from the photo but do you think its heat related does the paint looked cooked or blistered or could it be resonation/vibration related. Maybe if it was a heat problem they could be cleaned out and repainted with an high temperature type engine block paint?

Just a thought if you want to keep a nice black look.
