Fitting golf clubs in Cargo

So now that the weather is getting warmer, I decided to dust off the clubs and hit the range to tune up for the upcoming season. I was shocked to learn that my golf bag only fit diagonally in the cargo bay.

Can this be right? It fit horizontally in the trunk of every full size sedan I've ever driven. I would think the X5 would offer more not less room.

Question: I just can't imagine taking the X5 on a golf trip as a foursome now. Fitting 4 golf bags diagonally seems like a nightmare. Anyone out there come across this and have a solution?

Mine fits ok.

You have to remember, the driver is the longest club in your bag. That's the only reason that I can think of why you will have a problem fitting it horizontally.

Maybe take out the driver if you need to fit 4 bags and put the driver diagonally on top of the golf bags?

+1 on taking the driver out, yeah there seem to be alot of components stored over the wheels that take up some room back there

Yes, on pulling the driver...
I regulalry put 4 sets of clubs, width-wise & stacked 2 high,
along with 4 of us Geezers, in our ol'E53 X5. I gotta believe
they will fit fine in the E70.

I have a hood on my golf clubs as I end up taking them on trips or keep them in storage since I don't get that many rounds in. I will try pulling the driver to see if the rest will fit.

Even so, is that what everyone else is doing? Pulling the driver so the clubs fit?

I thought the E70 was around 60inches interior width. I haven't taken measurements of the width of the cargo but I guess it's tighter back there. Isn't a driver around 48" (46" shaft) give or take depending on head size?

Thanks for the responses. I just needed a sanity check as I couldn't believe the clubs didn't fit and thought I was going crazy or my clubs grew a couple of inches since last I used them.

Still don't get the problem you are having; as I mentioned above, 4 bags, some with drivers, in two rows width-wise and
stacked two bags high, plus shoes and junque, fit fine in my E53...maybe they shrunk the E70 width when they added the
400 lbs to it.

Same fit in our POS Honda CR-V...
Hellsbells, even our Vette Vert holds two sets width-wise, plus soft luggage, for week long trips.

You're actually correct stockguru. You can normally just toss a golf bag horizontally in the trunk of a sedan without any problems but not on the E70. It's not that the E70 trunk is tight, it's those side panels that are wasting the space. I always pull out my driver from my bag when I store it in the garage cabinet (space issues) so I'm used to tossing the golf bag in the E70 without the driver and just put the driver on top of the bag. So in reality, my bag won't probably fit either with my driver in it.

On the other hand, my wife's golf bag and driver is smaller and shorter so it actually fits horizontally without any problems.

On the 5 series, BMW provide a plastic velcro insert/sticker (as a joke?) on my old e39 and e60 that shows how to properly stow 3 golf bags. They should make one for the x5 too!

One set fits great, with either the base of the bag or the woods tucked into the opening on the left all the way back near the tailgate. It's the other three sets that are the problem.

I can get a full set in the back of my Boxster!

Just to clarify, they go in the E53 horizontally without a problem?
