Out of State Purchases

Man,
I just got my X5 today from out of state today and I realized that I can't drive the car legally w/o the title! Arrrggghh! All this waiting and now it's just going to sit there and tease me. Oh well.

Does anyone have any experience with out of state purchases. After you received your car, what steps did you typically take and how long did everything take? Thanks for everyone's help!

You mean you bought a vehicle and didn't get the title
when you purchased it? How did that happen?

If I buy a vehicle thats free and clear then I get the vehicle
and the title when I pay for it period.

I'm assuming you mean you haven't had a new title in your home state cut and that you have the original title, signed by the previous owner and a bill of sale. If you have those two docs and an inspection sticker, that is what you'd need to title and insure the vehicle in Maryland (all states differ so you'll have to call the DMV/MVA in your area).

IF you bought it out of state new from a dealer, it does not yet have a title and has never had a title -- it has a manufacturers' document of origin and has never been titled in any state. You need the bill of sale and the document of origin from the dealer. Call you State DMV and ask, or go to their web site to find out the procedure for titling in your state.

While much of the procedure is common between states, each state has it's own procedure and you need to find-out what Texas procedure is...

From the Texas DMV site:

"I have a question about titling that I can't find the answer for. What office should I contact?

You may contact your local County Tax Assessor-Collectors office for many questions. You can also contact the Texas Department of Transportation, Vehicle Titles and Registration Division. The VTR's telephone number is (512) 465-7611"

Thanks for the help guys. The stealership will be sending the title in the mail tomorrow.

I just got the state inspection done today and it took forever b/c they had to get a gas cap sensor thingamobobber. I have no idea what it's for, but I'm guessing to test that that a loose gas cap doesn't throw a warning light.
