Let me know how it goes. We are taking off next month in our 4.8 (only 5,000 miles on it) for a cross country trip and back (Houston to Nantucket). Had a quick trip last weekend (500 miles) and it was the best! Handling and ride to be expected (great), but particularly appreciated air cooled/active seat and the navigation system worked perfectly.

Get a rental car and have your wife or whom ever drive next to you just incase... :)

Well, when I drove on backroads in remote northern areas, I had the first aid kit, jumper cables, tow rope, cell phone + charger, flashlight, warning triangle, power bars, basic tool kit inc swiss army knife, litre of oil, gloves, hand wipes (all as per Meister), plus sheet plastic and rope for a ground sheet and shelter, a hatchet, flares, waterproof matches, candle, coveralls, and sleeping bag. At planned altitudes of 14,000 feet we added in emergency oxygen.

On paved roads close to civilization I now carry a litre of oil, a cell phone, and a first aid kit. Times have changed.

We just did a 3000 mile (round trip) Disney World from Canada and we were very impress on how smooth and effortless the trip was with the X5.
Also with the NAV system was pretty good too.
We still had the 19" RFT at the time of the trip but I carried a tire sealant and air compressor combo just in case, along with flashlight, tools, gloves, knives and quart of oil but I should've also carried the other things that X5 Meister and ravenheart mentioned too.
We stop off for fuel at night in this very industrial town in S.Carolina.
From a distance there was huge industrial factory that was very well lighted but as we came closer it seen completely deserted, like straight out of a horror movie (It was creepy).
So well just U-turned and drove back to the highway to a more civilization for fuel, not that we were very low on fuel but all the lighting from the factory made it seem like civilization. So that extra case of fuel would've been more of peace of mind.
Although I am was always well armed because I have a family to protect (Safety first when traveling) I wasn't about to take any chances especially driving in a BMW.

Not sure what you mean by paved roads close to civilization. I've driven only on paved roads all around the US and large parts of Canada and there were plenty of times when I hit stretches of a couple hundred miles+ that I would not have particularly liked to be stranded on. I've also camped a hell of a lot and driven in all weather conditions. Being prepared made all the difference in the world, certainly for peace of mind. Everything I listed came in useful one time or another, whether it was for myself or to help out another motorist who was less prepared.
