LED Interior and License Plate

6 Attachment(s)
Here are some pictures of my LED solutions for interior and License Plate.

No bulb out error and they also works when the engine is running... for those of you who may not know.. Interior BUlb are very picky....

Some interior LED may work when the engine is off.. but as soon as engine is on... its different story.

Now, I have not found a solution for map light... but the center counsol and two side one above the rear works..

alexmish 04-24-2009 10:55 PM

Looks cool ! Which LEDs did you use ?

tcn2k 04-25-2009 12:26 AM

Damn those are bright.

Rebel XT 04-25-2009 01:04 AM

Wow those are indeed VERY Bright! Lights up the whole car!

What type of bulbs did you use, and where can we find them? Also did you have to do any mod to the wiring?

Thanks!

1X Front Center Console: BAVAUTO 24 LED.

2x Rear above door: BAVAUTO 12 LED

10X 4 under door, 2 under front foot wall, 2 rear foot wall, 2 on trunk.

License Plate is a self modified OEM housing with BAVAUTO 2X 12LED.

with the exception of the license plate light, everything else is Plug and Play.

and They don't give out any error on my 2009 X5 at all. they all work when the engine is on.... Its very important that you test LED solution when the engine is on.... since on my E92, all LED worked.. until the engine is on.. only few will stay on... and error free... when engine is running...

Shinchan 04-25-2009 10:50 AM

I have the bavauto left over from my last car.. before i trade in for X5. now, there is a new led out there.. I am think will work..

V-LEDS HID WHITE 8 M-SMT 4W HIGH POWER BULBS 194 168 158 921 912

4 Watt.. with warning.. that these should not left on for long period of time.. so... its perfect for Center console.... which just need to turn on and off when the door is open... and since there 2watt application is super bright.. 4 watt prob is blinding bright...

jamesboags 05-01-2009 08:51 PM

I put some leds in the overhead lights and they flash , but same leds in footwell are ok.. is there some reason for this ?

rh71 05-01-2009 10:53 PM

nice, I actually like the low ambient lighting that goes with the saddle brown interior, but I will swap out the 4 under each door. I didn't even know those existed till I took a look just now - the stock lights there are useless. Thanks for the links.

EDIT>> BTW, v-leds.com has a few different coupon codes to apply if you just use google... good for 10-15% off (they don't stack) which amounts to free shipping.

Shinchan 05-01-2009 11:22 PM

mind to share some Coupon code?

Shinchan 05-01-2009 11:23 PM

Center console light are very picky... they check amp.... and wattage.... So not every LED works...

Shinchan 05-01-2009 11:23 PM

Map light are even worse.... very very hard to find one that works....

map light is the 2 round onces..... Same thing on my E92...

Yes I agree the map lights are impossible to find.. I left the 6w originals in...

Bozz 05-12-2009 08:03 AM

Has anybody changed the bulbs on the exterior door handles to brighter LED's yet or any of the colored dash or cockpit lights

jamesboags 05-25-2009 11:58 PM

The Flank leds work great in the rear overhead lights (not map) as well...

XCinq 05-26-2009 04:27 AM

:wow: That looks great Shinchan.

I will have to try and find these bulbs in Europe.

FreddyG 08-05-2009 05:03 PM

Have you tried this place?

They're quite a bit cheaper and they have a Great selection. I used them for LED's in past cars, but I knew what the bulbs looked like. BMW's are new to me and A LOT more finicky as far as anything electrical.

Festoon Dome Lights

spacegraye70 09-15-2009 07:13 PM

are they really that bright? or just long exposure times on the camera?

rh71 09-15-2009 09:26 PM

It's pretty damn close to that, I have the under-door lights from this thread. If you look at the door handle lights and these, it's actually very similar too... works well.

I'd thought about this too.

rh71 09-16-2009 07:58 PM

here I ran outside just for you guys:

This shows the under-door LEDs. 2nd pic is a little blurry but you can compare with the intensity of the door handle lights (which don't project to the floor themselves). These LEDs are bright.

Nokmate 10-27-2009 10:55 AM

After reading all your posts, I am thinking of replacing the interior bulbs with LEDs. I had a look at all the light and have figured out how to remove all of them except the front centre light housing. I would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me on this. Thanks.

Shinchan 10-27-2009 01:13 PM

Gentally pray on the clear plastic from the side, it will came out.

Tower the front end of of the housing, you should see two opening..

If you closely at those opening, you should see that there are two metal clips that snap in place. Use a really small flat screwdriver, and gentally unlatch one at at time. When unlatching, try to pray it with your finger while ur are unsnapping it.

jamesboags 10-27-2009 11:02 PM

There used to be instructions in the Owner manual for when you needed to manually close the sunroof manually with the supplied tool...?

Nokmate 10-28-2009 05:27 AM

Thanks. I found the instructions for manually closing the sunroof. Looks simple enough. Will give it a go later.

jamesboags 10-28-2009 06:15 AM

Just be careful... there are two tabs at the front of the small trim piece at the front that you remove.. I broke mine off but can still clip it on ok... from what I could gather the trim piece is not separate .. if you break it you are up for a whole switch console ... in excess of $250 USD...!!!

Nokmate 10-28-2009 06:34 AM

That sounds expensive. How can I be careful? Should I be careful pulling the small trim off or should I be careful with the clips? Sounds to me like you probably bent the clips too much.

Take it slow and follow the instructions in the manual.. I forced it a bit and it was about the 4th time I had taken it off... If they do break off you can still clip it on... just remember there are two long "prongs" at the front of the trim piece near the windscreen.....these are the ones I broke off they fit into the holes that you push the clips backward to remove the switch cluster...

Nokmate 10-28-2009 07:00 AM

Will bear that in mind when I have a go later. Thanks for the advice.

omasou 10-28-2009 12:09 PM

I like the puddle lights.

BTW, how do you like the seat organizers? I was thinking of getting them to keep my child's toys in and to keep their shoe marks off the back of the seat.

FreddyG 11-01-2009 12:05 AM

Do you Guys have any pictures of the actual lights that you replaced them with?

I'm curious to see how big the bulbs are.

Thanks Alot! :beerchug:

m32 10-04-2010 09:40 AM

I bought 5 sets of the Vled's that the OP suggested. I have to say...they are VERY bright.... brighter than the door handle leds. I love them but for $22/pair... I suppose it's worth it. The halogen bulbs just don't do it for me

Edwin

m32 10-04-2010 11:18 PM

Simchan,

how did you change out the front center console? Also, when you say rear above door, did you mean the rear license plate light or the two map lights above the rear door? Thanks

Edwin

I saw options of turning on/off voltage reading for lights on the Carly App. If I change to any correct fitting LED's can I just turn them off on the Carly app to not get any error codes?

This is exactly what I did (used Carly to turn off voltage monitoring). I dont think the interior lights are monitored but the licence plate lights are. I used these lights.

Oh and these in my Turn, Brake and Fogs. LED tech is finally at a point where replacements are way brighter than the OE bulb.
