Difference between E70 and E53

Hi everyone - soon-to-be-newbie here:

We have been taking our time looking for our replacement for our overworked and now living (hopefully) a quiet life 1998 323is, and have decided to go for an X5 rather than an X3 simply because with the seats down, we can fit our three dogs in the back of an X5 and not an X3 (I think that the salesperson at the local dealership almost had a coronary, though we did clean the back of all doghairs and smell :D).

We are still wavering between a 3.0, 4.4 and I have even seen some decent-priced 4.8, and was wondering what the differences are between the E70 and E53? I can't get an answer from searches on this site, and was wondering if it a simple 'duh' question, as perhaps one is standard and the other is automatic, or is the size of the engine?

Thanks.

E53 is the X5 made from 2000-2006, and the E70 is the newer model X5 from 2007-present.

Thanks for the clarification. It just wasn't too clear for me.

Well, back to my (virtual) car shopping...:D

Huh? No, the new X5's nomenclature is E70.

Like UCrew said, the E53 was the original X5. It was built from 2000 to 2006, with a facelift in 2004. The E70 came out in 2007.

Throughout its life, the E53 offered a 3.0L in-line six-cylinder engine, a 4.4L V8, and a 4.6L V8. The E70 offers a slightly more powerful 3.0L in-line six-cylinder, a 4.8L V8, and a diesel (3.5L, I believe?)

The E70 is a completely new model. It's bigger, wider, heavier, but more refined (some would say "softer"). The E70 has run-flat tires standard, which do not last as long, and are expensive! The E70 also offers a third-row seat, which was never an option with the E53.

Both handle exceptionally well, especially when equipped with the Sports Package. I've owned both (though my E53 did not have the Sports package), and the E70 does handle better. The E70, obviously, has the latest and greatest in technology, but I'd have no hesitation recommending either one.

IMO, the E53 is ugly, and the E70 is a beauty.
