214's looking bad pics

My front wheels are really starting to look bad. The paint seems to be wearing off. The rear wheels look ok so I'm thinking excess heat? I don't drive the car hard so I don't see how this is possible though. I also wash the wheels about once a week so the brake dust does not accumulate much. I scraped away a spot on the first picture with my fingernail. I'm afraid to scrape with any abrasives as it looks like the paint is coming off. They also have a rough feel to them whereas the rear wheels feel smooth and look shiny. Anyone having a similar problem?

Most likey - a rock probably hit the rim and then flaked the clear-coat on the rim.

are they replica's or OEM?

I only have 6k mi. on them in 1.5 yrs but my replicas still look pretty good as far as the clear coat goes. The only "natural" blemish is what looks like a dried water streak but it's in multiple places that soap/water can't get off. Only noticeable when up close and washing.

Replica's or OEM? How many miles?

Paydirtdog 05-29-2009 07:12 AM

They are OEM's with about 18K miles. The picture that has a spot that looks like it flaked off is where I scratched it with my fingernail! I'm sure I could take something abrasive and keep going but it looks like the finish is coming off down to the bare metal. The whole wheel feels rough too, not smooth and shiny like it should be.

if they're oem's, something is wrong I reckon
mine have done 31,000km's and are as shiny and smooth as they ever were and certainly can't be scraped by a finger nail

Probably a repair wheel by the manufacturer and it made it through the system and now, being a 'repaired' unit, you see what you do. Dealer most likely won't do anything - they always avoid paying out where they can weasel out of it.

I'm taking it to the dealer next week for some other minor issues and will add this to the list.

It's debris damage that has cut through the clear coat, not a defect.
