iPhone

I have been told by my dealer that there is not an adaptor plate for the iPhone here in Australia, is that true? How does the iPhone work on the X5 phone system as I believe the iPhone does not have bluetooth.

neilrmp 06-11-2009 08:15 PM

it does have bluetooth, I have the Iphone 3G and it works great with my x5, all my contacts shows up on my nav.

Juanted 06-11-2009 08:15 PM

The iPhone does indeed have bluetooth, and it works well with the X5.

iPhone works fine as it does have bluetooth and is compatible with BMW integration. Its just for some insane reason BMW do not offer the full integrated cradle. You just use bluetooth and if you have usb you can use the special cable to use the ipod features too.

So ipod cable charges the iphone but its not as tidy as a snap in cradle that does it all...

Cheers

I have the iPhone 3G snapin cradle and it works fine and charges the iPhone at the same time, although you cannot use the iPod part of the iPhone thru the cradle.

jamesboags 06-11-2009 09:59 PM

The snap in cradle is BMW part number 84.21.2.151.038 ?

But I would not buy anything from BMW dealres in Australia.. they are a rip off.. just got charged $125 for wiper blades.

aussiex5 06-11-2009 11:56 PM

Is this snap in cradle the unit that goes in the armrest for charging? How much have people been charged for it? Can you get it anywhere other than BMW?

jamesboags 06-12-2009 12:13 AM

You can get it on ebay from the UK for approx $130 AUD shipped....

brian5 06-12-2009 02:32 AM

aussiex5,

Yes, this is the snap-in adapter, eject box and frame that goes into the center console.

Not sure if you're asking about the iPhone or iPhone 3G. Those would be different snap-in adapters. This is what you need for iPhone 3G in E70:

84109141375 Eject Box $100
51166971037 Frame $60
84212151038 iPhone 3G snap-in adapter $111
07149144003 Torx bolts (2) $1

ECS Tuning, a board sponsor, appears to have the full package for $250. Shipping may be expensive for you though.

us_matrix 06-15-2009 05:28 PM

Will the $250 iPHONE adapter work with my iphone? My E70 does not equipped with iphone/ipod intergration kit option and premium sound package. Now, I am only using the Aux connect to my iphone for listening music but the problem is I cannot control through the steering wheel or idrive interface. If that $250 iPhone adpater support it?

Thanks.

You seem to be talking about two different things.
#1. the iPod/iPhone adapter. You need the 6FL option on your car and the Y-cable that connects in the center console. (You do not have 6FL option). This enables you control the music through the steering wheel or iDrive. I have seen mention of this retrofit on this forum. Of course, it's not cheap.
#2. the iPhone snap-in adapter (+ eject box + frame) that allows you to charge your phone and use external antenna.

You cannot use both option #1 and option #2 at the same time on an iPhone. (You can have iPod on #1 and iPhone on #2.)

apw2607 06-16-2009 02:30 PM

Hahaha. Of course there's a 3rd option ...

#3) the smartphone integration. Option 6NF. (Requires option 6FL). Uses a different cradle to standard snap in adapter but will allow music playback, charging, and external antenna. Not available in all countries.

us_matrix 06-16-2009 03:30 PM

I do not have the 6NF option, ipod intergration kit option or premium sound pacakge on my 08. The only thing I got is AUX input. What is my option here? If I want to connect my iphone to control via steering wheel and idrive while charging it (Cost effective way if possible)

Thanks.

hmm. you might want to check with EAS, they may have a CD changer emulation kit for the X5 that might work that would allow what you ask for.

Yes, that's an option for new X5's that are purchased now. Not an option for us_matrix though...

Got my 3g Iphone cradle today from the UK ($!30 shipped).. now just need to get an iPhone !!!

watrob 06-18-2009 08:03 PM

Are there any guru's out there that can answer this?

If you have 6FL (USB) in the centre compartment
Also have Premium Sound & Business Nav
6 stacker in glovebox

But you don't have 6NF (smartphone intergration) which is the base plate that allows the iPhone to be used thru the cradle as phone and iPod all in one.

Can you by buying the correct base plate (6NF) & matching Iphone G3 cradle install this, I mean take out the current base plate and plug in the new one which would give you smartphone intergration as you have all the other items already installed?

Does anyone in the States have the part number for this 6NF base plate?

When you order the smart phone integration the car already comes with the base plate from factory. I'm pretty certain they changed the wiring harness so its wouldn't be that simple to just get the base plate.

I can't even look for you, because getting the base plate out is a royal pain in the a**.

We don't get 6NF here but I don't think the change to the wiring is all the way to the computer. It would be how it joins the 6FL USB in the centre compartment. The 6NF base plate USB output would join into the 6FL wiring then into the computer.

Its a pitty we cannot get a diagram of the two different base plates!

Better question... why don't we get 6NF option here in Australia...does it contravene some local telco or government regulation... ??

Hi Jamesboags,

What we are trying to establish is that the 6NF is actually a different base plate that the cradle pushes into. This base plate hooks into the USB port that is in the centre compartment (6FL) thus allowing the iPod part of the iPhone to use the cradle for music.

That's why there is two different iPhone cradles available to suit the two types of base plates. What we need is a diagram and or part numbers of these two different base plates not the cradle parts as we know those part numbers.

Smartphone intergration (6NF) is only a $150 option so I believe getting this base plate could be a easy retro-fit!

jamesboags 06-19-2009 04:14 AM

Fair enough..Hopefully when I order my next X5 6NF is available..!!! Seems BMW continually Screw up options across countries to make it difficult...
