oil consumption
I got the low engine oil warning yesterday:yikes:
my 3.0d has a bit under 9.000miles when checking both the iDrive menu and the dipstick (yes, I've got one:D), the oil level was indeed at the minimum mark, so I added 1l of oil I'm amazed that the engine oil level gets to minimum after only 14.000kms... Breaking in was done as it should and I allow for the engine to warm up gently before putting my foot down. Anyone else encountered the same issue? I did have a 300mile trip last week where I was in a bit of a hurry :D and hardly ever got under 90-95mph... maybe this burnt some of the engine oil, but at that speed the engine makes about 2900revs, not even close to redlining... |
I would not worry at all about consuming one litre of oil in 9000 miles. It is lower consumption than many have experienced (my petrol 3.0 went about 5000 miles/ 8000 km before needing a top up)

I burn a quart every 5,000 miles - 2008 E70 4.8i

Yah seriously 1L/9k miles is nothing bad at all. Stay off the highway during break-in, it's terrible for ring seal..not the high speed or anything like that, but the lack of load when you maintain constant speed.

hi guys how accurate is your computer dipstick? my 2009 30i doesn't have physical dipstick and i'm starting to get paranoid. my computer dipstick still shows all green bars but i read someone posted that they too had full green bars on their 48i but the physical dipstick showed only a tad above minimum.

Hard to tell in my case since both of our current vehicles have no physical dipstick. The computer monitor works fine. I like the iDrive display better than the non-iDrive display we have on the X3. It goes down a litre over a period of time, usually 5000 - 8000 km, then I add a litre. I carry a litre in the back in the BMW top up oil case (holds one litre, paper funnel, disposable gloves) so that I don't have to go looking for Castrol if the light ever comes on. It isn't worth worrying about, just drive it. If it ever does get to the minimum, it is the appropriate time to add oil. Remember that there are still 7+ litres in there at that point.

thanks for the tip. hmmm. 7L? for my first oil change (30i) they only put in 6L exactly and idrive showed full green bars. now im more paranoid than ever lol. which car of yours takes 7L?

Both of them take 7 litres, but that doesn't mean that my 3.0si and 3.0tt have the same oil sump as your model. Paranoid much? Relax and just drive it. ;) |
Jumping in, our old E53 '01 3.0 takes 8 quarts, with a filter change and
full drain. Imo, some dlrs do a short fill...otoh, not sure of the E70 oil capacity, but E53s hold "7.9 qts" and mine takes 8 quarts with no overfill. GL,mD |
