engine harness

last thursday my car suddenly started decelerating till it stoped in the middle of the road
when i press the gas padel it wont move
they took it to the dealer and they say that tha( engine harness plug ithink) forgot what it is exactly has to be replaced
is this normal?
will it effect the engine?
