Anyone DIY the Oval tips on a 3.0 ?

I'm contemplating the oval tip extensions ... I saw the DIY steps on this forum, just wondering if anyone else has attempted this and what tool did you use to cut the s/steel pipes ?

Thanks in advance....

See if you can get hold of something like these JB, you may be able to hire them from the local Kennards centre

I am going to order the 4.8 exhaust tip and planning to do it myself too. Did anyone try this pipe cutter? I was thinking to use grinding or hand saw to do it. But this pipe cutter seems much easier to work with.

Hey I just changed my exhaust. I have my stock 48i muffler with the tips still on. My car only had 2000 miles on it when I did the install. Do you want to buy them from me?

:thumbup:I'm going to hire a sabre saw and get a blade that does stainless steel.....

Where's a good place to buy OEM 4.8is exhaust tips??

jamesboags 08-22-2009 07:59 AM

Put the oval tips on today.. had to remove the bumper to get a good cut with the sabre saw.. but that was ok as I did the rear wheel arches at the same time... over and done in around an hour... :D

SoCal_M3 08-22-2009 11:22 AM

I'm assuming the exhaust diameter of the 35d and the 4.8 are the same size. Can anyone confirm that?

Once you cut off the existing tip, how are you connecting the new oval tips? Are you using some type of v-band clamp? Anyone know where I can source those?

Many thanks for the input!

Nice! I just received my oval tip and will do it next week.
How did you remove the black plastic cover around the original round tip? It looks like they are glue on without any screws...
Do you have the instruction for removing the rear bumper in case if i need to do that route?

Thanks.

Heres the official instructions.. removal of the bumper inserts is fairly easy using a stanley knife.. I had the bumper off when I did it..you'll notice the kit comes with all parts for petrol and diesel ...

SoCal_M3 08-23-2009 12:28 AM

The pdf explains it all. Very helpful. Thanks for the post.

Thanks and this is what I am looking for. Will do it next week.

Cheers!

Good luck guys the hardest part is cutting the tailpipe... I measured about 105mm to allow for any errors... I used a sabre saw which jumped around a bit , so I started the cut with a hacksaw.... note I took the bumper off to get good clearance for the cut as the sabre saw I got was quite big...better if you had it on a hoist or maybe on car wheel racks or something to elevate the rear end.

Awesome!! Now I need the car to just get here ...

I have found the kit on ebay, but is there a better source to purchase it?

us_matrix 08-24-2009 04:55 PM

I got it from $320 plus shipping from one of the dealer. I don't know if i should post here. PM me if interested.

The directions show that you straighten the pipe after you tighten it ... Is that how you guys did it? Mine are a little cock-eyed and I have not messed with them much yet. I have the diesel and I am starting to wonder if the kit is not made for the 35d ...

I didn't need to straighten but you can rotate and move them slightly prior to tightening to get them square.. not sure what instructions you refer to about the straightening... :dunno:

us_matrix 11-23-2009 07:45 PM

all I did was just attached and screw in. That is.

sorry to dig out this old thread,

do you know roughly how much does it cost for a pair of these oval exhaust tips?

looks like someone mentioned $320. I'm wondering whether the facelift exhausts will fit pre-facelift models...

That does look pretty good, question though, one of his auction pics shows the pipes showing through the tip:

Do you know why it ended up being different and doesn't show?
