Weird noises when 35d shut down?
Anyone else have some really weird noises when the shut off the 35d? Today I parked the car in the garage, killed the engine and heard this strange moaning go on for 30 seconds or a minute. Do not think it was the turbo winding down. I let it idle for a bit before shut down. Weird! First time I noticed it....

Could be the oil pump to the two turboes or the turbos spooling down. It used to be the old thing to let a turbo tick over for ome minute so that the bearing did not fry.
My sd which is the sane engine does it at times. Nothing to worry about. |
Thanks DBC. Not sure. I have had many turbo charged cars (2 Saabs, AWD Celica Turbo, Twin Turbo Z, 1.8t - A4 wagon, Volvo XC). I have never heard a noise like last night. Did not hear it at all today..... Weird!
From your post I get the impression that you think there is a pump that keeps the turbos lubed after the engine is turned off?? No need to let them spool down? |
This may, or may not, be what you are hearing.
The 2009 X5 Manual on page 139 describes what happens when an X5 35d cleans the Diesel Particulate Filter and concludes with... "... You may also notice additional sounds and small amounts of smoke coming from the exhaust, even for a brief time after switching off the engine." Funf Dreisig |
