E70 Major Electrical Fault - Has anyone experienced this ?
 

Hi All.

Have a 07 3.0d sport which has just suffered a major electronics melt down.

Basically stopped at my house, went to switch on the hand brake which then displayed brake failure and systematically started to fail ABS, wipers, lights, hown, windows etc. etc. etc.

Its currently in with the Dealer since last Thursday who havent a clue what has happened to it, nor able to diagnose the problem.

Has any body experienced anything similar ?

I have exactly the same x5 as you. This is probably not the same thing but Iv been experiencing some weird stuff as well. While coming to stop at a set of lights the car put itself in neutral and switched itself off. All of the indicators went nuts and it said my 4WD system has failed. I turned it off, waited and turned it back on. All OK. Often when Im stopped I get Parking Brake failed but of course its not even on.

Took it to BMW and hey said its my Alternator !! I have a new one on order which should stop all the weird shit going on.

Certainly something for the service guys at my end to consider or at least cross off the list.

When things start to go freaky like that, it can be that the battery is approaching its lower voltage of 9V and hence, modules start shutting down.. giving you this Christmas tree effect with warnings. Alternator / Battery are definitely a possiblity. You should be able to go into I-drive somewhere and check battery voltage level for confirmation. If it is low.. that confirms it.

The X5 just melted down last Friday in the garage. Sat overnite and was dead the next morning. It was so dead the rear hatch and glovebox would not even open. Could not even get into neutral to push out of garage.

Of course the driver's manual was in the glovebox, altho not sure if it would have helped.

Charger would max out and then cut out when hooked up to the under the hood access point.

BMW Assist first sent truck with no long battery cables and no dollies. Sent second tow truck with dollies but charged us $75 for the dolly usage.

Dealer relaced "part" and serviced, provided loaner , and returned X5 yesterday at no cost. Wife's vehicle, so I let it go at that just glad to get it. :dunno::dunno::dunno:

The glovebox needs power?? Or does it lock with the doors.....I am confused..

Although I do see a small flaw in not being able to get to the tool in the back even if you knew how to use it....I wonder if you can access the storage compartment withthe tailgate shut from inside the car and leaning over the back seats??...doubt it would be too easy.

Yep this is the symptom.. I was fooling around putting some led indicators in the rear turning lights and had this happen and thought I'd shorted something.... you'll notice that when you restart the car the clock is reset and the radio is on mute... it also won't power up the idrive screen when you insert the key only when you start the car...:rolleyes:

I'm too big, maybe a small child or woman. The hinged rear floor moves up at the very rear making access from the back seat very difficult at best.

I was amazed to find the garage door opener and Bluetooth pairing were both working when we got the X5 back!

I could not help but wonder if my Porsche battery maintainer would have provided enuf juice to at least get it into neutral and maybe open the tailgate. :dunno:

That is IF the lighter plug were hot wuth ignition off!!

I'm too big, maybe a small child or woman. The hinged rear floor moves up at the very rear making access from the back seat very difficult at best.

That's all your service work says? Sounds suspicious, like the time when a member's E70 brakes completely failed on the highway, and the dealer wouldn't give written documentation of the work.
