Thanks that sounds interesting. I'd probably buy one but the docs say it only works with variants of the windows OS.

FWIW monitoring voltage while the engine is running is relatively simple using a cigarette lighter volt meter like i think you posted in another thread. The trick is measuring voltage when the X5 is supposedly "at rest" without triggering one of it's automatic electrical responses to simply unlocking, or even opening, a door, etc. AFAIK the only way to do this is to securely clip longish test leads onto the Red Battery Terminal and a ground in the engine compartment and close the hood with them extended through the hood fender seam. That way I can measure the voltage without touching the X5. Of course, this is not very handy, since I'd have to remove/replace the test leads every time we drive the X5 :( Any better ideas are welcome :)

How about you disconnect the battery and take your measurement. Better yet, hook up to a load tester and see if your battery is OK.

Ummmm.... From what I've read in posts by people who have replaced their own battery, I might have to take the new X5 into the shop to get it reprogrammed after reconnecting the battery. And I don't relish the idea of explaining why I disconnected the battery when nothing was wrong.

Just to be clear, I have NOT had any low voltage warnings or any of the other electrical issues others have described. I'm simply collecting base line info so that IF/WHEN I have an electrical problem in the future, I'll at least know what passed for 'normal' when our X5 was new.

You mean that the car looses its setting if you disconnect the battery??? That is nuts. I store my cars for months at a time. I guess this is going to be a problem??

I just tested again after a 50mi trip yesterday evening and a quick (55-60mph) 10mi run to the local hardware store. Note: the engine was a full operating temp. for this test.

With all the doors shut, the hood open and the whine at full tilt - 12.46v.
Once the whine stopped - 12.66v. :yikes:

So whatever that high pitch whine is under the hood, it creates quite a voltage drop between the red plastic covered + terminal under the hood and ground (the shiny cross brace). IOW the difference between thinking your battery is 100% charged and maybe only 75% charged.

We have had 'High Batt discharge' dealer put in new high powered battery and it still happened. Have now been told that we have to change our driving pattern and buy a battery charger to put the car on when not in use, when I asked if BMW would supply the battery charger i was told 'no'. Did read in another thread about someone who had a friend at BMW Germany that said that it was aknown problem there and arranged for a new alternator to be sent to him. BMW Australia deny that this would fix the problem. Had an email survey from BMW Australia which i filled in and requested that they contact me, still waiting. Don't really know what to do next

I have mine if for service.. they have had the car since Tuesday as I reported a couple of things including steering wheel trim peeling...I'm expecting the same response...what I have also reported is a haze on the headlight that causes a dark spot in the beam pattern... the dealer has filled out a form to BMW Australia seeking their position .. this was done on Tuesday .. still no response... which is not surprising because if they admit it as a warranty item they will have to replace the headlight .... am driving a 120i loaner at the momenet with 800k's on the clock...

Dealer replaced the battery....for mine.. I guess that's not the solution though...two years old though so I'm happy to get a new one....!!!

Got mine back yesterday. They reviewed my driving pattern via the output from the computer and suggested that i have too many trips in the <5km range. This would result in the battery not charging sufficiently. They have submitted a request to bmw to change the battery from a 70amp to a 90amp and I am waiting a reply. I am surprised that BMA Aus would suggest that driving pattern contributes to this issue, a car of this quality and calibre, BMA Aus should be embarrased to suggest the put it on a trickle charger overnoght, or occasionally go for a long drive. NOT GOOD ENOUGH....

ahhhh - glad i got that off my chest ....that feels better already

Mine was replaced by a 90 one.. I now have to write to BMW Australia who have refused to fix the headlight haze within my Xenon that causes a dark spot in the beam pattern ...:stickpoke
