*** Winter setup Blk Style 209 Wheels on my Jet Blk 4.8i ***

I got my OEM style 209, 18" wheels powder coated gloss black. Funny thing is I thought they were at least 19" until I took them in to get the tires mounted...then realized they're only 18"!

I didn't want silver 18" or 19" wheels as they would just look too small after taking off the summer 21" 215's. That's why I got them done black so they would blend in and not look small. I guess they will be covered in snow in no time so it won't really matter!

Anyhow I've got some mixed compliments on these. Some of my friends think it's too much black. My wife thinks they simply look ugly! Tell me what you guys think...thumbs up or down??

(More pics on pg.2)

dathrilla 10-17-2009 09:09 PM

real nice...how much did they come out with the tires?

I actually worked in a set of winter wheels when I bought the car. I can't remember now but I think they were around the $3.5K range...

Penguin 10-17-2009 11:05 PM

I think they look fine. But if there's an issue of "too much black," how about adding a red accent stripe?

Looks great. Best looking X5 for the winter I have ever seen.

alexmish 10-18-2009 12:24 AM

Mixed emotions... Presence of fender flares does not help :(

Take another picture from 3/4 angle...

mtech8 10-18-2009 02:00 AM

I like them and agree with you. The all black doesn't make them look as small. The silver would make them look too small.

exactly, because of the fact that there is not tire/rim contrast the wheel looks like one big rim.

poleposition 10-18-2009 09:15 AM

They look awesome King. I did the same with my stock 19's. Powdercoated them Gloss Black. Havent put them on yet. Waiting for the Blizzaks to arrive. I love it. Great job.

:iagree:, :thumbdown

C's Bimmer 10-18-2009 04:22 PM

Love it! I am about to buy a set of 18's for the winter and have them powdercoated black, just like my 20's. I was concerned they would be too small, but that actually looks pretty good. Since our cars are practically identical, this gives me a great idea of how it will look. Don't listen to these other clowns. They're just jealous our X's look so good. Either that, or they just love chrome.:rofl:

I'm sold! Thanks!

BMWLOVER 10-18-2009 08:04 PM

I guess it depends on peoples taste but I think it makes it look really nice!

Edge647 10-18-2009 08:21 PM

I think it looks pretty bad a$$ for winter!

Dking05 10-18-2009 09:22 PM

"Hey, get that car off the dam side-walk, are you crazy?!" jk

18's never looked so good!

Michelle 10-18-2009 09:43 PM

I think they look great! Much better than they'd look if they were silver. Nice way to make winter rims look better.

Edge647 10-18-2009 09:45 PM

Are those fender flares painted?

Glad you posted the 3/4 angle pic, I was wondering what 18's would look like with the flares still on...

poleposition 10-18-2009 09:46 PM

King, might i suggest some spacers?

Spacers are sitting in my garage! I believe I have the H&R 12mm & 20mm sizes. Just haven't had a chance to put them on yet...:D

rh71 10-19-2009 09:10 AM

looks as good as 18s on a huge vehicle will look.. helps that it's lowered too though.

piaabro210 10-19-2009 09:53 AM

Thumbs down for me!

villajoe 10-19-2009 09:58 AM

Thumbs up once you get the spacers on!

8ball 10-19-2009 10:27 AM

You need tint in the front.

Nope, my bumpers and flares are not painted. I just try and keep them as black as possible. It drives me crazy when the rubber/plastic starts to look white or scuffed. That 3/4 angle pic should look better once I get those spacers on. ;)

I love the all black look!

ODI69 10-19-2009 06:18 PM

Look great King,thumbs up!

King 10-19-2009 06:43 PM

Okay so far I have: 16  1 :thumbup: 3 :thumbdown and one undecided. The jury has decided :D Maybe I'll keep this look then for a while...

BMWX54.4 10-21-2009 06:20 PM

I really like how they look for Winter. I like how they look so much i think i would wear those in NYC as everyday

motordavid 10-21-2009 06:27 PM

Titz looking, imo...
and, you'll like the 18s vs the "19s" you thought you had,
plowing through the drifts.
GL,mD

Hey, quit clowning around and check out the wheels on my ride! (Note I am not calling anyone any names.) Had to get that in there...

Your car looks amazing. I can't tell you how much you've changed my view on 18's in black for a winter set-up. I was seriously concerned about going to 18's and was thinking I would have to cough up an additional $1000 to go with 19's, as the car was going to look to awkward with such small wheels and the theme of my car. However, now that I've seen your car, I'm sold. Man, Winter in the X might not be so bad afterall. Cheers King!:D

Well it looks good from the side view but the wheels do look kind of puny from behind especially with the wider wheel arches. It does help if the car is lowered and if you plan on using spacers. I already had the 18's so I tried to make them work with the look. However if I was going out to buy a new set of winters, I would probably get a set of 19's. Granted your winters are short so you may be rolling on them for four months or so. But here, I may have to keep them on for five to six months! :( We've already had our first snowfall so I had to get these suckers on fast. I bet you can find a set of 19's on ebay that someone is selling. Everyone and their dog is buying the 3.0d, I'm sure some of these guys will be selling them and looking for 20's.

projectz 10-28-2009 01:55 AM

That is a great look!

King, are you from BC?

Was going to suggest the same thing. I may do it on my black type 68's on my 3 series

medicchoi 12-15-2009 11:04 PM

Wow, they look good!

FreddyG 12-16-2009 05:37 PM

Here's a chop of the wheels with a thicker red stripe on them. I think that they look Really Nice! I'll thin outthe stripes and post it later if you'd like!

Haha, I don't know if I would put a red stripe on those little 18" wheels. They're just my winter set. My 21's will be back on in spring!

Ordered my 210's today and having them powdercoated high gloss black. Blizzak LM-25 RFT's will be mounted next week.

We're going to look like twins for winter and summer. :)

C's Bimmer 12-16-2009 10:01 PM

Looks like the A-Team! Hahahahaha!

omasou 12-16-2009 10:15 PM

I agree w/the wife. Way too much black. The red is only making things worse.

Problem is there is no contrast.

JA330xi 12-16-2009 10:32 PM

Great car, but I agree with your wife.

BTW: After 30+ years I have finally figured it out. When you are wrong, your wife obviously wins. When you are right, you also lose. Go with the wife's judgement on this one.

I have a dark green '08 3.0si. The standard rims look great, even with snow on them.

Best of luck.

Just for the record, my wife seems to have come around. Now she says the agressive look has 'grown on her.' She takes my car almost every morning now to drop off our daughter at pre-school. She's always liked the way it drives, and now I think she likes the attention she gets...

I pity the FOO who don't like my black wheels!! :D

King, I can't get a good view of the rears, but before adding spacers on them, do the rims sit very far into the wheel well and look Crazy with the extensions on there?

Thanks! :beerchug:

I've noticed on this forum and with these cars, it's definitely an age/demo thing when it comes to modifying the X5.

I wish they would make the X5 offsets for the CSL Reps once and for all. I would love a set of 18 inch Black CSL Reps with Studded Nokian Winter tires...
