Kick mat suggestion?
 

To those with toddlers:

If you use a kick mat and if you like, please share the brand name. I would like to protect the back side of the passenger seat that suffers from little feet kicking it once in a while :) I would also appreciate if you could share ideas about protecting the rear door panel from the same little feet.

Kick mats that I found on Amazon have poor designs (according to reviews). I hope somebody could find a solution that fits X5 well.

Great thread! Any protective covering on door sides and seat back would help save my car from my kicin' and sreamin' little ones! Also any remedies to suggest before they knock out the rear air vents?!

count me in - the ones I saw in the pics from shinchan, the interior lighting thread, looked decent.

I use the Stuff 'n Scuff backseat protector... blends great with black leather.

I tried a couple of different brands\kinds of kick matts and returned all but this one. Installs pretty easily, although if you're a nitpick about placement you might be spending a few extra minutes to try and secure things. As for fitment, essentially there is an adjustable strap that loops around your head rest posts and a seperate cord\string that loops around bottom of the kick matt. The cord is long enough to go around the bottom\base of your seatback to secure fitment and not get in the way of things.

Quick note when comparing to other brands\makes: The design of some of the other varieties had elastic bands\strings that were meant to hook around the mid\bottom part of your seatback. Unfortunately, I guess BMW seat bolsters are larger than average (I have the sport Seats) and wouldn't accommodate them well. The elastic band would float in the space between the side bolsters and were just ugly to look at.

I'll post scans when I can to give you an idea of how the setup looks w/the Stuff 'n Scuff installed. I'm always on the prowl for better products so if anyone else has or knows of a better product, I'm all ears.

I have used a number of seat protectors and have found that coverage was lacking around the shoulder area. This area just happens to be the place where my young kids like to rest their feet. A few of the seat protectors I have purchased fell apart after a short amount use as well.

As such, prior to delivery of the X5 last weekend, I did a little research and found a seat protector on Amazon that I think works very well. At $30 each, they are quite a bit more expensive than what I have paid in the past. That said, the Chelsea seat back protector from Rover Gear provides quite a bit more coverage than other products I have used and also protects the sides of the seats. My X5 is equipped with the multi-contour seats and side coverage roughly ends where the plastic seat back meets leather so I do not think this product will interfere with side airbag deployment.

This seat protector is very adjustable with elastic straps on the bottom and sides and and it also fits on my Honda Civic, which has a significantly smaller seat back compared to the X5. Construction and material seem to be of high quality.

I do have one question regarding removal of the front headrests. The top of the Chelsea connects via metal grommets to the headrest posts so to fully install these protectors, I will need to remove the front headrests. The owners manual indicates that a dealer must remove the headrests (perhaps because of the active head restraint?) From what I have found on the internet, all it takes is a few hard upward strikes to a fully extended headrest. Unfortunately this advice has not worked for me. If the only course is to take it to the dealer, I think I will end up cutting the grommets at the 5 o'clock and 7 o'clock positions and snap them around the headrest posts. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

I would cut a long strip at 6:00 of the velcro and grommet... the velcro will still keep it secured and the grommet will still be a full circle. You can bend the grommet open to squeeze it through the head rest and bend it back once it's in place.....please post pics, Im interested of buying since it looks like a great product.
