My CA told me yesterday that, quote, "You probably won't be getting the car for quite a while because the factory only runs either gas engines or diesel engines at any one time, and then has to switch production to the other engine after a few months. Right now, they are producing gas engines." Furthermore, he said, "It'll probably be February by the time we get your car."

Now, unlike other threads I've read, I have no worries about the eco credit being good until February. Not with a signed purchase agreement including the credit. My dealer basically has a signed contract offering me the car I ordered at a given price.

My question is: anyone ever heard of the Spartanburg factory cranking out one engine type at a time? It sounds reasonable to me, but then again, what do I know about how BMW NA runs their factory?

Just curious. I hate to wait until February. :-(

I also think he's full of crap. Just curious what dealer?

Your dealer is clueless. I just looked at my dealers allocations two days ago. They were even discussing the availability of some special November allocations where they could potentially squeeze a few more in (and the BMW rep was actually sitting there). They are building them daily.

Dealer is WRONG. He does not have a diesel allocation till February and therefore you are getting this story from him. Find another dealer.

Well, I got that one answered! :-) The unanimous opinion seems to be my CA is a bit naive, shall we say. I do think that the explanation of no allocation but a "special order" is correct per one Funfdreisig's comment above. But the engines.... Okay, tomorrow I'm gonna call the dealer and ask:

Can you trade an allocation to get me this car sooner?

I don't have any other dealer options as I'm sitting in SW Missouri and the nearest dealers other than mine are KC, St. Louis and Tulsa, 150 miles away. I know I can drive to either city, but I prefer the convenience of my local dealer.

I do have another option: I'm moving to the Bay Area in the spring. I could just cancel the 2010, wait until I move, and see what the 2011s are like. Any idea when they will be available? I could then shop Bay Area dealers, which might be fun. :dunno:

Thanks for all the info!
