Backup Camera as a standalone option

I have submitted, as a safety concern, a request to allow the backup camera
to become a stand alone option.

If you feel the same way call 800 831 1117 and make the same request.

Maybe we can drive a safer vehicle without having to purchase the complete Technology package.

It isn't available on the X5, but is a 400.00 option on the X6.

I am with you, this is the main reason I ordered tech package. I ordered before 2010 i-drive details were out. Now I am happy I did because I like the new features of the tech package (3-pane camera with direction guides, 3D hard drive based navi, etc). But you are right, if you have kids or drive near them, there is no way you can see anything when backing up. I think rear view camera is a must on any SUV

Perhaps not as good as a camera, but I believe you can get the PDC as an individual option, and it is quite sensitive to small objects, and gives front coverage as well as rear.

That's what I did, I ordered PDC instead of the tech package.
