gotta question about a noise
 

I have an easy question for ya'll: I always notice a funny "clicking" sound coming from the engine and it accelerates when I accelerate. I only notice the sound whenever it's cold out. I first noticed the sound in Germany and I asked a mechanic at the dealership and he said it was nothing to worry about and he explained to me why it was making that noise. The noise does go away whenever the car warms up. Can ya'll tell me why it is doing that? I can't remember!!!

That would be for lack of a better term "lifter tap". There is a recently updated service bulletin on the noise that now involves changing the HVA's for the exhaust camshaft. (Hydrolic Valve Adjusters)

It is a warranty covered repair naturally so best bet would be to schedule an apointment to get it in service when they can get you in a loaner car as it will take a couple days in the shop. I've done this job myself on an E70 and it does indeed fix the noise. :thumbup:

I just had this fixed. As weasel says it's the lifters. My 08 was done in 24 hours. So far, the noise is gone AND it has better low speed response, which I was surprised at, I have a call in to the SA asking if they did anything else that would have alleviated that situation.

Well, here's my worry: I live in ND and it'll take up to 6 hrs to go to the nearest dealership in MN. My husband just got orders to PCS to TX (we're military) so the best thing to do would be to just get it fixed in TX if the drive from ND to TX doesn't do any harm. Even if the MN dealership gave me a loaner, I can't wait in MN for 1-2 days for repair. I did speak with a service advisor and he said that it would be ok to drive to TX and that no harm would come of the engine. Now if it will be ok, then I will wait and get it fixed in TX. But I don't want to cause any damage to the engine. What do ya'll think? Should I wait as he suggested or go ahead and get it done?

I drove mine with the noise for months due to laziness in getting it fixed the 2nd time. Alternatively, the dealer can also do a "bleed down" which only takes a few hours so you could wait for it, and then have the lifter fix done in TX when you get there. Does the noise go away after the X warms up or you drive it for over 20 miles? It did on mine. (just curious).

yeah. it does away after my X has warmed up. i've also driven mine for months with the same noise and never worried about it.

The bulletin says not to perform the bleeding procedure anymore... in other words they won't pay us to do it as it didn't do anything that a drive on the highway didn't do.

The drive to TX will be fine, nothing to worry about. It might even be quieter after the drive for a little while.

what model year does this noise affects? Is the noise only for the 3.0 or 4.8 as well? TIA.

Thanks Weasel. Appreciate the advice. I'll just have a dealership in TX look at it. It's funny that u said that there's a bulletin saying not to perform the bleeding cause the service advisor (from Sears BMW in Minnetonka, MN) said first the bleeding and then parts would be ordered if needed.
