Recommendations Please
I have 18" wheels to replace my 20's on the 2009 X5 for the winter. Tire rack offers several winter snow tires and I was looking for some recommendations. Seems like a lot of folks on here like the Pirelli Scorpions but that may be because they are one of a few that make snows for the larger tires. Wondering with 18's what people on here would suggest. Choices seem to be:
Bridgestone Blizzak LM-60 Continental 4x4 WinterContact Dunlop Grandtrek WT M3 ROF Michelin latitude Alpin HP Pirelli Scoprion Ice & Snow Thanks! |
Vredestien have a good sized range although I have not tried them they sem very very reasonable price wise.
I have just bought some M sport OEM 19" rims and plan to put their "Extreme 4 Track" on and for the 4 it comes to £500. I need to do a bit more research on them as its my familly who will be in the car and they need to be as good as they can be. |
anyone try the Dunlop Grandtrek WT M3 ROF? I have had Dunlop Wintersports in the past and am leaning towards these. Thoughts?

The Blizzaks and Scorpions are highly rated.

Had both Vred's and Blizzaks on previous cars when i lived in the cold, white north. Both were VERY good in deep snow and ice, blizzaks were better, but dry traction and stabilty were very compromised. The compound was so soft the car rode very sloppily on dry roads. Vred's gave a better ride on dry, but were not as capable on ice.....one of them would be my choice.

Had Blizzaks and Michey Alpins: Blizzak may be a slightly better tire for serious azz
snow/ice, but as X-cellent remarked, they wear like thin veneer on dry roads. The Michey Alpins, (now the Lat Alpin, but simply an evolved version), were very good also, and wore better in non-snow situs. Back at the Selection Ranch, I feel that all the brand name dedicated snow tires are fabulous these days...I'd hunt for the less expensive buy unless the OP is living in way upstate NY. GL,mD PS...if you don't put your winter set on too soon, or run them too long in the Spring, you should easily get 2-4 winter seasons out of the set, depending on your winter mileage and dry road %. |
