stopped working.

So I recently had my fuel pump replaced last week and about an hour ago my car died in the middle of the intersection. I was at the red light and then my car just struggle to get fuel again. This was the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to me that involved with cars. Cars were honking because they can't see my hazard lights in the day time.

So now I'm waiting for the tow truck to come from BMW roadside assistance. wow this is just plain ridiculous. Luckily my friend was only a few minutes away from where I was at, so I'm posting at his comp.

yeah i know someone who had this happen to them twice also.. make sure they do the repair right now

Happened to me twice. Make sure they replace the control unit for the fuel pump also. They did that my second repair and all has been fine since.

how do i know they perform this repair? should it be in my statement when i pick up the car?

Ask your service advisor what they did.

If you wait until the car is DONE, you are setting the SA up for possible failure...if you bring it up then, and they didn't do it, they are almost guaranteed to come up with some excuse/lie/explanation as to why it wasn't necessary.

There are a number of ways in which you can exert control.

1. Just tell them "I want x, y, z done" verbally- expllain what you want and why- let them know your expectations.

2. Limit your approval on the work order to 'diagnose and provide written repair order'. You can restrict your approval, and/or add conditions (no work without faxed approval, 'repairs on on express written approval of owner as to parts replaced, etc)

Remember, even though it is a warranty claim, it is YOUR car, and the dealer needs your approval to repair it. I also usually say "telephone authorization not permitted, fax or written authorization only".

Typically this isn't needed, and many SAs will bristle if this happens on a first visit- but with a repeat problem I'd have no problem justifying my position.

Also, look at it from their side- if they have an owner saying "Look, there are mulitple reports that this failre requires XYZ, and you only did X last time- so unless you can provide me with an airtight explanation as to why Y&Z arent needed, I expect that to be done".

If you do not make your expectations clear, how can they be made accountable and how can they get it right the first time?

(I know, in a perfect world there is 'one right way', but such is auto repair.)

huummm...my car is in the shop getting a new fuel pump too. fuel pump control unit..note to self..Glad mine died in the driveway.

Is this a common problem? I remember some E36M3s having fuel pumps replaced but they were usually track junkies.

Did you mileage take a dump right before the fuel pump went? Might not be related but mine when down to low to mid 11 mpg from full to almost 1/2 empty.

Michaeljr6- Do you have the diesel or one of the gas models?

it's a gas model. 2007 3.0si
