Subwoofer install in 09 E70
Does anyone have information regarding how to install a subwoofer in an 2009 e70? I searched the forum and found information on older models as well as complete stereo overhaul. However, I have not found much on the e70 and more specifically information on adding a subwoofer (with built in amp) ONLY!
Am I nuts? Is this possible? Wiring pinouts, pictures, etc would be greatly appreciated. Depending on the information I receive, I plan to complete the install over the New Years break and will be sure to include lots of pictures. Thanks |
very possible, but if i were you i would install the Individual Sound System.

Thanks but the X5 has already been purchased. My goal is to enhance the standard sound system. I like the highs and mids but the lows (bass) is horendous! lol |
You'll need to make a parallel connection from your stock amplifier's sub output and feed it to a new mono amplifier that will power your new sub. You'll need the following:
1. Speaker cables from stock amp to new amp. 2. Sub woofer cable from new amp to new sub 3. High to low converter 4. In case you want to make a custom box, then additional materials are required. |

I just installed a JL 10" sub from car toys. AMAZING! I love it. It was installed on the right side of the trunk flushed into where the fuses are. I will post pictures soon. Put in a bass knob and lowered the stock settings. I just wanted a simple setup with some good bass.

amp wiring kit which includes battery wire with fuse holder, remote wire, earth wire, phono leads and sub woofer speaker cable. high to low level converter. for power pick up remove battery cover in boot to reveal battery i took my 12v and earth direct from battery but make sure your 12v is fused. for the remote turn on for the amp i took that from the 12v out put socket which is in the boot on the right. for the high level input i picked the input wires from under the drivers seat from the stock subwoofer wires. i didnt need to remove the seat all i did was move it all the way forward and then pulled out the air vent under the seat and then i pulled forward the original wires from the subwoofer and connected my high to low level converter and hid the converter in the same position, there's plenty of room. then run your phono leads under the driver seat rails were there is a split in the carpet and straight to the back. i only connected the one input on my high level converter as getting to the passenger side sub woofer under the seat requires un bolting the seat. with one input my bass is more than heavy, it make a big difference adding a after market sub and amp. Ive located my amp in the rear left passenger side were the original amp should have been its a 500w with a 1000w sub. you don't need a crazy install to get it sounding good. hope this helps |

For those of you that had a sub installed what type of amp do you have and where did you put it?
I went to have my JL Audio 250/1 installed today and he said it would need to be on the outside of the trim (not hidden like my e53). I have an X5 with 3rd row seating and was hoping for a stealth install so I could easily just pull the sub out when I needed the extra space. Thanks! |
My amp which is much bigger in size than JL 250/1 is in the trunk on the right side, behind the side carpeted panel (adjacent to the fuse box).
I suggest, try another car audio shop.... |
Thanks for the follow up. My rear right side panel is design to "cave in" to allow for more storage in the cabin (i.e. golf clubs) etc. Is yours like this?
Also do you have any pics of your amp install? |
So I did a lot of digging / looking today. Shashank Mittal, it appears that your amp is next to the battery under the hatch. Did you have to modify the plastic insert? If not, did you just remove the plastic insert that covers the battery?
Looking at your pics in your album (sweet setup btw) it appears that the crossover was mounted in side right carpeted panel or am I seeing it wrong? |
Alright, I took some pics of my X5 and proposed area.
I had a few questions: 1.) Did you install your amp below the plastic protector? 2.) Is just removing the plastic piece an option? Is the only function for storage? 3.) Any problems with what I pictured below? http://www.mindworks.net/bmw/1.jpg http://www.mindworks.net/bmw/2.jpg http://www.mindworks.net/bmw/3.jpg http://www.mindworks.net/bmw/4.jpg http://www.mindworks.net/bmw/5.jpg |
I used the videos BSW has on YouTube for the subwoofer installation, wiring colors, which to tap, etc for my E53...do they not have the same for the E70? I wouldn't pay BSW's prices, but maybe checking out their site will get you the info you need...wiring colors for left, right and remote turn-on being the most important ones that you need to find. The problem with taping the wrong wires on the amp is that some may be controlled by the DSP, but for the subwoofer, you only want the signal that isn't filtered so you can let your aftermarket amp do all the filtering.

Thanks, yeah I think the pin-out is ok, however i'm just trying to figure out where to install the thing. The 250/1 amp is really good and I had it mounted in my side panel on my E53 however the side panels don't have enough space on the E70. Or I haven't figured out a way to mount it in there yet with the stock setup, so looking to put it under the floor.
|
I put mine in the left side panel like you did in your E53, but I've seen people flip the spare tire over and make a panel to mount it inside of the spare tire...once again on an E53. I've also got the sliding load floor, so the side panel was the easiest. Maybe underneath the rearseat, but I'm not sure the amount of open space in there in the E70 vs E53.

I have put in a powered sub but very unsure what are speaker cables can anyone tell me what colour cables are the subs . Am I right in thinking the amp is on left hand side looking at the rear of the car .
Many thanks if you can help |
Can anyone elaborate on how to tap into the signal source?
