Tire replacement issue
1 Attachment(s)
I'm running a set of Vredestein Sessantas on 214 wheels. Last night I caught a nail close to the sidewall of one of the front tires. My local tire shop says they cannot repair it because it is too close to the sidewall. My only option is to get a new Vred tire. But the problem is that nobody in DFW area carries this brand of tires. This, in turn, means that I will have to order them from out-of-state. This may take 5-10 days. During this period of time I really need to use my X5 to haul my family and the in-laws who are visiting us.
So, I'm looking at two options, I guess: 1. Use the temporary spare until my new arrives, but this is not good especially on highways 2. Buy a cheap (not sure if it exists) tire from a local store and run it until my new Vred comes in. I'm not a big fan of that due to the waste of $200 or so for the tire I'm going to run for a few days. Besides, different thread on the front tires may not the best idea either. Are there any other solutions that I cannot think of? By looking at the attached picture, can you tell if it is truly unrepairable? Maybe some other tire shop could patch it up? Thanks! /Sergey |
Easy, you can fix that one. I think the tire company wants to sell you a new tire. I'd say put a patch in it from the inside and you'll be fine. The tire also has steel belts in it and really, if you had pierced the sidewall, then I'd say you need to scrap the tire. From the pic about, your close but still safe in my opinion. You could put a plug into it but for for more peace of mind, put a patch from the inside.

Try another tire shop. IMO it's repairable.

I had that situation closer to the side than what you have and just used the plug myself. Used it for another 20,000 miles with no problems...

My mich diamaris had a nail above your yellow box, and that is what you call "close to the sidewall". Brought it to a tire shop, they said no, but i insisted and told them ill get a replacement the next week. Guess what, they patched/plugged it and it held up pretty good...

:iagree:... with previous posts.
I had a nail as close or, closer than that in my old BStone Turanzas, and my local hillbilly joint did the mushroom plug and patch; that tire already had one patch, ...and it ran fine for quite some time, until I tossed them all for a new set of tires. Not sure I would go cross country with that or, do parking lot auto-crossing, but it should work if done carefully. And, you do have your spare as a back-up if it goes on you; it will give you time to order the new tire. GL,mD |
Thanks to all for sharing ideas! Special thanks go to those who even offered their unused tires for the cost of shipping :)
I showed this picture to a guy at the nearest Discount Tire and he said they will fix it. And they did! Hooray DT, thumbs down GoodYear/Gemini! |
