Understanding production process !
 

After reading through BMW manufacturing process, am I correct in saying that even though production status says 'In Production' nothing happens until 'In the body shop' and 'In the paint shop','Being assembled' subsequently ?

Essentially Yes. As I understand it, "In Production" is when they are 'organizing' the various parts (e.g. drive train, interior, wheels, trim, etc.) so that they show up on time to become your X5. Once it goes into the body shop, it pretty quickly moves on into the paint shop. But there can be several days delay even after it is painted while it waits in the overhead stacker to be 'assembled'. Note: the online and 1-800 status calls this time in the overhead stacker "in the paint shop".

Thank you, my 35d entered Assembly on Friday, still there after 2 days. Probably there are no Sunday shifts.

My 35d went into "schedule for production" on 1/6.
What is the 1-800 # to check exact status?

IIRC the people would did PDC in November said the factory only recently re-started production on Friday. So I wouldn't expect any assembly on Sat or Sun. But I could be wrong.

Thanks. If I check my production timeline, you are correct that it was shutdown for holidays. But it looks like it was back on last week, 'cus mine moved to 'In the bodyshop' on Tuesday from 'In production'. It was in that status for 2 full weeks.

It takes about a week from start to finish...

Pretty ironic. My X5d is also in the paint shop....with a scheduled completion of Jan. 12th. Looks like we are "family":wow:

Funf, or perhaps anyone else who knows, please tell me the "online" address/link to monitor production status? I called today and mine is "in production" with anticipated completion date 1/22. Would be easier to monitor online, instead of calling, if there is a quick and easy link for this purpose. Thanks in advance.

EDIT: another Q, my "Vehicle Inquiry Report" indicates "Priority 1 - Customer Sold" Anyone know what this means? I have seen some posts mentioning "Retail Sold" and I have no idea what other categories there may be. Thanks again.

You have to register on the BMW web site in the owners circle section...

The web site isn't as up to date as the information over the phone...

Priority 1 = Customer Ordered (vs those that are produced for the dealer to sell off the lot). The car is for a specific buyer as a “sold” car.

Mine is "Scheduled for production with no confirmed production date." My CA says it's slated for a week 4 production. Is that next week or the following week? It's unclear given that New Year's was on a Friday.

On our 335xi, I recall it went from this state into "In production." Will it ever say, "Scheduled for production on <xxx>"?

My CA called today to tell me my vehicle started production at 11:00am. He said the process takes 3 days and then my X5 will be loaded on to a train. The train takes 22-24 days to travel across the country to Oxnard, CA. Here my car will be loaded onto a truck and brought the rest of the way to where I live, Seattle. He said I should have the car around February 8th.

Funny thing is, the BMW site still says my car is "On Order." Not very accurate. :)

My status is 'released to carrier, waiting for transportation to port of exit'. What port of exit ? Are they shipping it to Germany ?

Wholly... online is more advanced this time. My vehicle is at 'Preparation Center'. What is the difference between that and 'At your BMW Center' ? Can I have my hands on it tomorrow ? let me see...

Where does one find a "Vehicle Inquiry Report"?

It was a single page .pdf email attachment I received from my CA the day I ordered. It includes the production #, dealer and customer and build description.

Status did move to Schedule for Production today. Looks like the site is about a day behind.

Mine is in the body shop with a completion date of Jan 19th. :(

Mine is at the same exact stage. Also on it's way to southern cal. At least they can keep each other company. Haha

Status changed this morning...released to carrier. At least this time it doesn't need to get on a boat and make it through the panama canal.

Do you mind sharing the timeline for your order? I'm trying to get an idea of when to expect mine.

true.. AW/BLK 3.0L is mine

Mine was ordered dec 2, went into prduction on the 22, and is now on the truck leaving the Socal VPC up the coast

While my status updated via the 800# today to "released to carrier," I called my dealer and it actually left for CA via truck yesterday.

well my car made it to the dealership today.

So I received a call from my CA yesterday morning. Said I should expect my ride in a week or so. I checked online and it still reads out at the prep center. I called the 800 # and it tells me it's awaiting a shipping vessel. I hope by shipping vessel (default message) it means waiting for train to haul it over to the west coast.. anyone else in the same waiting game?

I will call my CA for an update. I'm sure we are on the same train. Mine is a 35d SG/SB.

I couldn't do that. I did receive your email. I can't find his number, but I should get it from a friend tomorrow and give him a call tomorrow.

Okay sounds good...I got a quote as well..much lower from the other guy. Want to see what your peeps say.

I called my SA and he said that it still shows "in transport." Same as the 800 number. Interesting part is that online actually shows that it was recieved by the distribution center. Let me know if you get an update.

Sweeeet! Mine is waiting for a train to head out west. My CA told me it scheduled to arrive at Oxnard on the 19th and then should be trucked to me around the 24th...Woot Woot! :dancing:
