Well I think Mr Einstein was right about infinite stupidity.... I have been thinking that I have the Sport seats because I ordered the sport package. I actually have, I think, the multi-contour seats which, I believe is the more adjustable seat. Is multi-contour the same as "comfort" seats I've seen in other posts?

Having the contour seats, however, doesn't help my discomfort. The headrest only moves up/down electrically and only front/back with tilting the upper portion of the seat. This doesn't seem to effect the head position which is pushed forward by the headrest not allowing the upper back to mold into the top of the seat. In other words, the headrest front back position is not changeable on its own.

Now given the fact that I probably do have the multicontour option, I am rethinking the cause of the problem since others have voiced problems with the sports seats wishing they had the multi-contour...My ability to reason is diminished due to pain and lack of sleep. When I visited the dealer he was surprised to see how far tilted back I was sitting. He adjusted me forward which, at first, as with all new positions feel better but then reverts back to the pain.

Does comfort seat have headrest adjustment that pushes it forward and back? I have comfort seat, read the manual, played around with it a bit, but only way to push the headrest forward seems to involve tilting the upper half of the seat forward. This in tern creates uncomfortable seating position for me. So with comfortable seat position, I can't rest my head. Am I missing something? From manual, it seems that sport seat does have a button that pushes the headrest forward but comfort seats does not seem to have this feature?

No the comfort seats do not have the headrest depth adjustment as the sport seats do. The only adjustments in the comfort seats headrests are the height - adjusted electrically, and manually you can push the middle of the headrest in a little creating something of a cradle for the back of your head. Of course that's only good if you can comfortably rest your head there ;). They are much larger than the sports seats headrests though.

I like my current seat because whenever I get it, lumber support squeezes me in place and whenver I turn off the car, lumber support lets me go, found it pretty cool. I just wish there is a way to push the headrest forward a bit...

From my experience, I found E39M5 sport seat being very comfortable. But as far as comfortable seats go, Audi A8 has it nailed down. Even the seatbelt height was adjustable electronically. X5 comfort seat, although it's cool with lumber support, I wouldn't rate it highly.

The button for the headrest fore/aft adjustment is shown in this pic.

OP, maybe you can swap your sports seats with someone with comfort seats if you can't get it comfortable enough.

With the seat adjusted correctly my head does not rest on the head rest while driving nor does it in any of the cars I own.

I have always thought of the head rest as an anti whiplash safety feature and for a passenger to sleep on. I wouldn't want it to touch my head while driving as it would get in the way when looking side to side and over my shoulder.

All just MHO of course.

I liked the backrest bolsters squeezing too but that to me is/was a distant second behind the upper back adjustability. I never found the non reachability of headrest w/my head to be an issue. Other than in a Volvo I don't think I've seen that in any other car, including my E39 sport. It's the upper back support, or lack there of in the X5 sport seats, that is a huge problem for me. In the comfort seats the upper back is independently adjustable and I was able to set it perfectly to match my back so it felt supported along it's full length. Basically feeling like a full seat I can rest my entire back on. Unlike w/the sport seats where I feel like sitting on a stool w/a short back, and the upper just dangles there unless I bend it way back, which is unnatural and uncomfortable. The headrest however w/its three positions comes out pretty far forward though and I can set it to touch the back of my head during normal driving. The problem is there is a space between the upper back and the back rest good 1/3 rd of a way down below the headrest. This in turn is very uncomfortable as well.

The best I was able to do, was to lower the headrest all the way or almost all the way down, set it to it's middle positon front to back, and then in a very poor way its bottom supports the top of my upper back (shoulder area) in the least uncomfortable way. If it's in the most forward postion it pushes my shoulders even further forward and cuts into them w/the bottom edge. If its in the least forward position then its even w/the backrest and just doesn't come forward enough to do anything.

For the headrest to function as intended in an accident the centre of it should be at the level of your ears.
