I say this because its was quite common for Bmw dealers to fit "M" bumpers to non-M models and here they would obviously had to paint the sensors. Also how could Bmw dealers repair crashed bumpers with pdc,if they cant paint the sensors? For example ,on an E39 rear M-bumper all sensors come in black from the factory but the middle ones are always colour coded as per Bmw!
As you long as a paintshop uses the correct primers and masks off the pdc properly ,you will never have a problem.
Maybe its country policy, but in the UK Bmw have no say in this matter.

Whenever we had to replace PDC sensors, it was because they were damaged. BMW than sold us a color coded sensors and that was it. Yeah I can see how you can just paint them. But since they are damaged to begin with, we just ordered new ones.

What I would hate to see is somebody drop good money on a sensor, get them painted and have them stop working. At that point they are screwed. Good to know people have success painting them, especially when retofitting or painting textured bumpers, which all have the black sensors.

Of course they will sell you colour coded pdcs but this is special order and will take longer!Doesnt make any sense if you are paintshop, does it!If its the end client I can understand him wanting painted pdcs!
Bmw dealer will also sell you pdc sensors just primed, ready to paint(its an original part number),this is why I dont understand why "they" told you they dont recommend painting it!
Its not just "people" that have success in spraying pdcs, its Bmw dealers all over and majority of paintshops!
Who mentioned spraying black pdcs on textured bumpers(black)? Why would anyone want to?On what photos I uploaded, did you see that?If you are referring to that "M" bumper, thats exactly how it comes from the factory!Colour coded middle pdcs and standard black on the edges to go with the black trim bumper protector

Anyway,I just hope my replies have proved useful to the OP.
In all my posts,I am not one to post irresponsible information! If I dont know much about a thread, then I just read it and learn, unlike some who post to confuse and dont know what they are are talking about!

Powers1 this thread is great because I learned from it as well. My shop repairs a heck of alot of BMW's. Bmw only ever offered my shop a prepainted PDC, Now I know I can save myself and my customers money and buy a primed pdc sensor.

As far as the textured bumpers, I meant that when people change the trim color on there X5's to body color, I have seen the Pdc's painted to match. No way arguing with you or trying to confuse anyone. Never said the E39 was a retrofit, I knew thats how they are, I owned a 540I with M package and pdc, perhaps my favorite BMW after a clean e36 M3.

Love the kit and color of your X5. Is yours a 4.6is or did you add the bumper spoilers?

Sorry for my misunderstanding!I apologise for that.:)
On the subject of X5 owners spraying their textured bumpers and colour coding the pdcs,I too think they look so much better left black :).
Personally,I dont like the bumpers and arches painted but its just my preference!

My X5 is a 3.0D sport packet,Brooklands green with beige interior,to which I added the 4.6is kit and wheels.
I love the 540i with M kit ,in fact I bought the 18" wheels when I had my E30-M3 .:)
