The 2010 X5 35D is in my possession!

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to let everyone know that I picked up the new ride late yesterday afternoon. I forgot to bring my camera but I snapped some pics from my Iphone. Just a teaser.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_VoaUoyv6edg/S4...s720/photo.jpg

I'll be taking more pics this weekend when I start the modding process. Stay tuned. ;)

Intial thoughts: Love the technology package, love the sound of the diesel engine and the torque it provides, sports seat are comfortable, love the new idrive, my color combo looks awesome vermillion/tobacco/dark bamboo...very rich, overall im a happy owner.

What I miss is the ambient lighting inside the cabin. Yeah...I was spoiled with the E93..:D

There is ambient lighting on the X5, are you saying that the E93 is different ?

Yup, it’s different on the E90-93. The doors from the inside have LEDs along the door that emits a red glow, like under cabinet lighting. It’s very soothing and stays on the whole entire time when you drive or when you get in and out of your car. It looks awesome at night.

Our '10 35d does exactly this, so what's the difference?????

The E93 could be ordered with a factory installed LSD dispenser, by which it's driver could take hits of LSD without removing his/her hands from the steering wheel.

Due to cost cutting measures this optional feature was removed from the 2010 E70 models.

The option will be brought back in 2011, in an attempt to convince drivers that their new X5's are actually nice to look at, when compared to the 2010 models.

Great Color, Enjoy it!

Mine has it too: "563 Ambiance Lighting" is included in Premium Package. When I took delivery it was daytime and we (dealer sales people and I) looked all over and could not see it. By the time I got home from delivery it was dark and the feature was evident (nice too!). I see the red glow in the door pockets and coming down from ceiling console over center console. Are you sure yours is missing? You show Prem in your list.

Nice looking ride! Congrats. Show some interior photos too.

It says that I have it...hmm..I guess from all the excitment of bringing it home i didnt see it. I'll check again tonight. Is ambient lighting something we can turn on and off from the idrive or instrument dimmer switch? I guess I was use to seeing it on the doors on the E90 as shown here: e92 Interior Mood ambient Lights - So Sweet! - BMW 3-Series (E90 E92) Forum - E90Post.com

Thanks,

DaRip

mswaz 02-25-2010 08:08 PM

I believe the E70 ambient lighting is nothing like the E92 lighting. I have been in a 335 coupe and that door lighting is very cool. Nothing like that in the X.

MUCH more subtle than that. You will see a red glow in the door pockets and red glow shining down on the center console. I like it but I doubt I would have been happy had it been as bright as those pictures seem. The poster says they are not as bright as the pictures make them look but that certainly looks too much for me. Don't feel bad about missing them at delivery, we REALLY looked, put our hands in the door pockets and couldn't find them. I do wish the interior door handles had these red lights as well but overall I think it is nice the way it is. I do not think you can turn them off in iDrive. I could see where iDrive lets you turn off (by checking or unchecking) "welcome lights" but it is less than you would think. I had thought it had more to do with the LEDs in the exterior door handles but all I have found so far is that "welcome lights" only changes the headlights coming on or not when you hit the keyfob unlock (and the headlights have to be in the automatic position for this to work at all - of course, most of us keep our headlight switches in the auto position anyway). As soon as you turn the vehicle on in the dark of night, you'll see the Ambient Lighting.

congrats... can't wait to see the mods you have in store for it.. :D

It's too bad that BMW didn't see fit to illuminate the window switches. Seems a bit odd, considering the cost of the vehicle.

?? Mine are back lit - just like the speedo and iDrive controls (and all dash controls too).

Well, I guess I may have found the first thing broken on my X5 then! Odd that none of the window switches on any of the 4 doors are lit though...

Is yours a 2010 model?

Anyone else with a 2010 Diesel that can confirm the window switches are backlit at night?

RedRockin 02-25-2010 09:19 PM

2010 30i Prem, tech, 6FL, heated front seats, boards and rails.

I guess it could be a Diesel difference, although it doesn't make sense. However, heated steering wheel is no longer part of the cold weather package on the 30i but still offered on Diesel and 4.8

I checked last night and all the window switches are backlit. I think you need to take the car in for service.

As for the ambient lighting, I do have it. It’s just not as bright as the E92-93 and very faint.

Actually, I think it was offered at the time I ordered (12/30/09). But, if you look at bmwusa.com - now, you won't see it listed if you go tot the 30i build your own:
Cold Weather Package $1,250
• Heated front seats
• Ski bag
• Retractable headlight washers
• Heated rear seats

BMW North America

Ahhh! So it is! Kinda silly to not just list it, for obvious reasons. From the 35d build your own packages page: Cold Weather Package $1,250
• Retractable headlight washers
• Ski bag
• Heated Steering Wheel
• Heated rear seats
• Heated front seats

I really wanted the heated steering wheel to go with my heated front seats but not worth the extra $750 I would have had to spend just to get it. Have no need for heating the rear seats, ski bag or headlight washers. My sister used to work for BMW corporate and told me heated wheel was a $100 stand-alone option. Not any more! :thumbdown

phattbam 02-26-2010 04:30 PM

^ yeah> i kinda wanted the rear heated seats for my passengers. I forgot to order the multi comfort seats.. :(

Don't have passengers very often, lead a fairly reclusive lifestyle. So I am really not an inconsiderate jerk, just couldn't see spending that much cabbage for the occasional passenger and our winters are very short here in AZ!!!!! Today is 62 degrees!!!

I wanted the ventilated seats but feared the multi-contour seats requirement. had a bad experience with my infiniti. The moveable frame that allows the thigh bolsters to move made the seats horrendously uncomfortable. Did not notice during the 20 minutes or so of test drive but quickly learned of the problem about 1.5 hours into the 2 hour drive home from delivery! :( But, if these are our problems in life... ;)

Are they lit on all the doors, or just the driver's door?

Thanks!

dont let leasing hold you back from modding.. just keep the stock parts around so you can put it back to return...... But I'm sure we'll all like what DaRip has in store for his X

This may have zero value but it now pops back up in my memory from delivery. When we were searching for the Ambient, I asked the salesman if the window buttons and headlight switch were illuminated. He said "no". Of course I was surprised as I cannot remember the last vehicle I had without illuminated switches. Of course, that turned out to be incorrect. I have no idea why yours aren't but I'd guess its probably just a bad fuse. Finding it might not be so easy (with three fuse boxes!). Let us know what happens.

Hey Red...im loving it so far. My coworkers are enjoying the lunch rides :D. I will be starting my modding early tomorrow morning with my buddy. I take a bunch of before and after pics. Should have about 80% of my mods completed tomorrow.

You can mod just put it back to stock when you return it. ;)

Yeah..the weather sucks right now and its not going to get any better this weekend. All my parts are waiting at home for me. Thankfully my buddy is helping me install most of the stuff in his garage.

Are you going to install LED License Plate? Im thinking of getting the the R Dash lights. Anybody have any good solution for it? I know I can do a search and I already have.

phattbam 02-26-2010 06:43 PM

arent the license plate lights already LED? my '08 E92 had them

Nope they are not. They even got rid of the strut to hold up the cargo floor up...had to go order parts for it. It would be hard to hold that cargo floor up with one hand and try to pull the space saver spare out with the other. BMW trying to cut cost.....

phattbam 02-27-2010 12:52 AM

I didn't know that. I guess I need to check out my ride and see what the "standard" mods are and start my list
