DaRipper's E70 35D Mod Weekend

Hey Everyone,

So this weekend myself and my good buddy Scott, worked on my brand new 2010 X5 35D. We thought we could finish everything on Saturday but ran into some obstacles that prevented it. We finished up on Sunday at my in-laws automotive shop. Here is a little write up from each mod task:

Saturday @ 800am at my buddy garage

Here are pictures before the operation.

Task 1 - Change out exhaust tip to 4.8

Difficulty 2 ( 1[easiest] - 5[hard])

Pretty easy install if you have the right tools. Reciprocal saw is a must for this. Here are some pictures:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_VoaUoyv6edg/S4...4/DSC01016.JPGhttp://lh3.ggpht.com/_VoaUoyv6edg/S4...4/DSC01017.JPG

Daripper 03-01-2010 12:37 AM

Task 2 - Change out front orange reflectors to color matched

Difficulty 4

I thought this was going to be easy. I was so wrong. For the 35D you can not go through the front of the plastic air dam or go from underneath like the 3.0 and 4.8. For us to change out the reflectors, we had to remove the original wheel flare, the tire and then the plastic wheel well covering. That took some time for both sides. Here are some pics:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_VoaUoyv6edg/S4...4/DSC01027.JPGhttp://lh3.ggpht.com/_VoaUoyv6edg/S4...0/DSC01029.JPG

Put on the new extended retrofit wheel flare..

Task 3 - Replace old wheel flares with the extended flares

Difficulty 2

Just make sure you have a plastic rivet tool. It made things much easier.

Here are some pictures:

On both front extended wheel flares, the top most hole did not line up and was offset by an inch. Was only able to use 8 out of the 9 rivets. See the following picture.

Here are some pictures of the install of the wheel flares:

All done for the day....

Sunday @ 1000am at my inlaws auto shop. I'm glad that I have access to a car lift.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_VoaUoyv6edg/S4...4/DSC01058.JPG

Scott and I working on the most important mod, the Aerokit.

First thing we did was mask off the exhaust area so we can use high temp spray paint and paint the heat shield that can be see through the exhaust tips.

While the paint dries, we start work on the front aerokit. Over all the install was pretty easy, if you have a car lift. Had to scratch our heads a few times but we are engineers and could figure it out. Here are some pics of the front end:

The back aerokit was easy...we got the hang of it. ;)

All done with the AeroKit....

Daripper 03-01-2010 01:36 AM

All done for now. Aerokit looks amazing with all the mods that were done on Saturday.

The aerokit paint is pretty close to matching my factory paint but I'm not satisfied. Going to be calling the shop that painted and see if they can do a better job. In the sunlight its a shade off.

Here are the pics off the lift:

All done for now until my other parts/mods show up at the end of the week and next.

Next Mods:
-Clear bra
-New Wheels (TBD)
-LUX H8 Angel Eyes
-Cargo strut bar assembly

Thanks for looking and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask. The new wheels will complete the car. Anyone have any to sell? 20 x 10 and 20 x 11?

Thanks,

DaRip

Very nice. Thanks for the good write up and pics. My aerokit is being painted right now and my wheel flares are in the garage. Will go on soon. Maybe I will install at my friend's dealership to use their lift, since it seems to be easier that way. Where did you get the plastic rivet gun?

I order this:

Marson 48000 Klik Plastic Rivet Setter with Pouch

Worked great and you dont have to remove the tire to use it.

nice job with the step-by-step pics, first time seeing such detail on the aerokit install. I have a question with the rear aero...

http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/4994/27973724.jpg

My side aero there is coming away from the body a bit... it is no longer flush against the bumper like the opposite side. Do you think that's just a loose screw somewhere or did it slide out of some plastic retaining part? Or over time, these things may get warped?

If I had to re-set it, I'd have to remove the big center piece first? Also, where was adhesive used if any?

It probably came off the carrier, which is the plastic retaining part underneath. I dont think it is warped.

You just need to remove the center piece to get access to it. Just remove the self tapping screws, I believe there is a total of 5 and repostion the piece.

The instruction said to use some betalink but I didnt put it on because I will be getting the clear bra this weekend and will probably need to remove the front aerokit.

Hope this helps..if you need more pics let me know.

Thanks JaaX3. Yeah its off. I brought it over to the body shop that did the paint. The guy is going to respray it darker. He had no problem matching the reflectors. I'll have it in a few days and it will be back on. :D

Looking through all the pictures I took, I dont have any other pics of the exhaust. You dont have to remove any body work or lower the exhaust. Just have to punch out the openings for the bigger exhaust, measure 100mm from the muffler and cut the exhaust pipe, which is easy. Ive attached the instructions I used. Enjoy.

wheels will be hard to decide... but i'm sure whatever you decide they will look great on your beautiful e70

Awesome write-up Daripper! Gorgeous X5!

I second the 128's. I love how easy they are to clean and keep clean. Super fast to take a California duster to it in between washes to keep them shiny.

Or consider the 333M's. Fresh new look.

jaaX3 03-02-2010 03:24 PM

3rd on the 128s - my 100% absolute favorite BMW wheel (the 21" version).

Also, did you notice a different exhaust note with the new tips?

Nope...no difference in exhaust tone. All I hear in the vehicle is pure diesel/turbo sounds. =)

128's (i'm biased)

How much to paint the Aero kit? I am thinking to do that and found the kit selling on ebay for $799.

yeah that's deal.. what color is yours again US matrix? AW??

Yup..dropped it back off to get it resprayed because it was a little lighter. The reflectors match perfectly and he told me that he was running out of paint when he sprayed the aerokit. When he got more paint the following day he sprayed the reflector. He had no problem respraying it for me at his cost.

Do I miss something? He "was running out of paint when he sprayed the aerokit". So this means the aerokit is too light and needs to be re-sprayed "at cost"?? Is it me or does this sound like he goofed and is charging you "cost" to fix his goof?

Know you saw DMK's thread. I like his tail light lenses, wonder what they look like when lit/brakes, etc. I wouldn't try them tho as I am way too dependent on my back-up lights (no street lights where I live). Like the rims too!

Daripper,

For Areo kit, did you need to drill any hole or mod or glue on the bumper before you can install the kit? Or all you have to do is just remove the existing screw from bumper and put the plastic carrier on?

Tks

Tks

There is no modification done to the original bumper to install the Aerokit. Just slap the carrier on and measure to make sure your level. Use the self tapping screws to mount the carrier in place. I think I used about 30 plus screws to mount the front and rear. I have instruction but I will have to post it later when I get home from work.

Great write up! Thanks for taking the time to do this very informative!

Got the Aerokit back from the paintshop and its 100% match now. Looks awesome.

Saturday brought the car to Omega Tint and had Vince apply the clearbra. I forgot to bring my camera so I didn't take any pics while he installed it. Vince does excellent work and I highly recommend him. He covered the every painted piece on the front facial including the aerokit, side mirrors, 4 door cuffs, fog lights, headlights and outside edge of each door.

You cant really see the line where the clear bra ends. I am 100% satisfied. Some pics the day after.

Next mod to do is hardwire my V1. Going to have to do a search on the forum to see how everyone did theirs.

Also the wheel search continues....thats pretty much it. Oh I will have to do a follow up with the Vince @ Omega just to touch up the clear bra. Will have him install 30% Ceramic Tint on the front windows to try to match the factory tint.

Enjoy! ;) Stay Tuned...for more.

Looks awesome D! Congrats. I'll probably get mine done next week with a "standard package" done by a highly recommended place in Scottsdale. It includes about 24" hood (about 10" past BMW) and all the parts mentioned in the other post. What do you call the "inlets" (?) with stainless looking strip thru the middle ->below fogs and above aero? Was that part difficult to do?

x5TT 03-07-2010 11:34 PM

Are you going to change fog light to LED/HID?

Yeah I want to do but I'm trying to figure out how to get access to the fogs. I looked in the manual and there is no directions on how to replace the fog lights.

I removed both air intake plastic pieces but are completely blocked. Im guessing I would have to remove the font bumper to get to the fog lights which is a pain if If the bulbs go out.

Got to do some research and figure out what vendors are out there who can provide an easy plug and play solution.

- DaRip

You should be able to get to the fog light by reaching up under the front valance/bumper after removing the vent pieces.

I tried with no luck. On the 35D there is no way to get access unless you pull the front bumper off, Im guessing.

I removed both air intake plastic pieces but are completely blocked. Im guessing I would have to remove the font bumper to get to the fog lights which is a pain if If the bulbs go out.

Got to do some research and figure out what vendors are out there who can provide an easy plug and play solution.

- DaRip

which fog light will you go ahead? I have done a bit research, but can't pick up the right one

phattbam 03-08-2010 03:11 AM

the non diesel models are easier to replace fog bulbs with. I removed the black grill pieces and it was open behind that

I got two very big packages yesterday...the ups guy had to use a dolly to bring it in the house. It almost took his back out trying to lift it. What can it be? :D I was going to take a break this weekend from touching the X5 but I guess I cant. Well it depends if the other parts arrive today.

Enjoy your weekend everyone!

Hi DaRipper - just installed my aero kit, but hoping you can help me understand where to apply the Betalink adhesive. The diagram in the instructions is poor and I want to make sure i do it right the first time.

Thank you for your help.

Hey Kirk..

Sorry about not responding sooner...weekend getaway with the wife.

I haven't put the betalink on yet and I probably wont. But from reading the instructions you put it on font center piece, in the area that touches the other front pieces, so there is no gaps. I try to take pics of the area where you apply the betalink.

How the aerokit turn out? Lets see some pics!

- DaRip

Daripper 03-22-2010 01:42 AM

Since it was gorgeous last week, washed the car, got the clear bra touched up and had Vince from Omega tint the front windows. I know its illegal in CA but it just looks so much better with it. Used 30% Lumar Cermaic in the front to match the factory tint; perfect match.

Still waiting for my parts to arrive so I can install the new wheels. Sorry Phatt..got to wait a little longer. I haven't ordered the tires yet cause property taxes are due soon and have been spending too much money on the car. Got to take care of the bills. :D

Here are some pics of the tint.

Yup...those are the wheels off a X6M. I think they are style 300M. They are reps btw. If you were to use the original X6M wheels you would have to bore the hubcentric to 74.1.

Yup same as OEM 20". Front are 275/40/20 and rears are 315/35/20.

You shouldnt have any problems going with 275/40/20 without changing the flares. There is person on this forum that did that..got to find the post.

I like the sport roof racks that are flush. The standard roof racks leave a gap where it is a pain to get the snow off and the rain still drips all over you when you open the door and onto your seat when getting in. The sport roof racks don't have the same issue.

E70x5 04-07-2010 04:03 PM

Does anyone know if the sport roof rails (ones that fit flush) use the same mounting points as the regular ones ?

mtech8 04-07-2010 04:05 PM

Daripper. Your car looks SWEET!!!! The wheels look nice. Looks easier to clean than the 214's.

Completely agree. The standard roof rack gap make it hard to clean the car too! Getting that towel in there or waxing is a pain!

I was curious on doing that as well. I prefer the streamlined look of the sport rails plus they are brushed aluminum vs black. I'm thinking the cost might be higher than the standard black ones, as for mounting points I'd assume they are the same.

Over the weekend installed H&R 20mm Spacers in the rear. Applied a thin layer of anti seize on the spacers. Here are some before and after shots.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_VoaUoyv6edg/S9...6/P1010620.JPG

After install of the rear spacers, did a test drive at various speeds. Did not notice any vibration or anything weird. For those who are going to ask me how come I didn’t install any spacers in the front, I chose not to because I didn’t not want to add any additional stress to the front steering and suspension since the front end does a lot more work than the rear.

As for lowering the vehicle I don’t plan to because I don’t think H&R and Eibach have design springs for the diesel weight. Reading everyone review about lowering their car and how it made the ride quality awful doesn’t appeal to me. I’m keeping it stock height.

Enjoy and have a wonderful day. On to the next mod!

Nice work! I just added H & R 15mm rear spacer over this weekend too. But I was wondering what is the anti seize about? Where did you apply it?

PasPar2 04-26-2010 01:24 PM

what kind of tires are those? thanks

phattbam 04-26-2010 01:26 PM

nice work D.R.

@ us_matrix, anti-seize would allow you to remove the spacers at a later time. With time metal to metal contact will heat up and "seize" together. Seize means that it may bind together therefore making it difficult to remove.

Daripper 04-26-2010 01:27 PM

You apply the anti sieze on the face of spacer where it touches the original hub/bore area. The anti sieze helps prevents the spacer from sticking so you can easily remove it. I have heard stories where it took alot of force to remove the spacers. Didnt want that to happen.

Lets see some pics of your ride US_Matrix!

@ us_matrix, anti-seize would allow you to remove the spacers at a later time. With time metal to metal contact will heat up and "seize" together. Seize means that it may bind together therefore making it difficult to remove.

Thanks Phatt! How things with your ride? Anything done to it yet? I know you got something up your sleeve.

I never came back to this thread to find out what wheels you ended up with. Wow great stuff. I may try that route when I tire of the 214s. Did those wheels feel heavier or lighter to hold as you installed them?

Great job taking it from all stock to what you've got now.

Thanks rh71. It has been a journey but having so much fun with it. The weight felt the same as my original 19's with the run flats. They both were heavy or I just need to workout more..

May be Aero kit in the future. So far, I have done... 20" 214, running board, exhaust tip, rear camera/mutlimedia interface and rear spacer.

Got all my stuff online through multiple vendors. Aerokit and reflectors from Tischer (getbmwparts.com). Flares and tips from Ferman BMW in FL. Talk to Joe Smitha. When I was comparing prices he had everyone beat.

How are you liking your wheels now that you've had time to try them out?

Did you have the wheels tested before you mounted them?

How are you liking the wheels as well? I'm also considering ordering from oemwheelsplus but am concern w/ the quality of reps.

BTW where did you get the BMW caps for your reps?

Daripper 05-17-2010 12:42 PM

So far I put about 2000 miles on the new wheel set. I have no issues with the wheels and all I can say is its much better than the original RFTs. I am happy that I made the purchase.

The shop that I had the wheels and tires mounted said their were no issues with them. They were able to balance the wheels with no problem.

I too was worried about the quality of the reps but after talking to the owner of oemwheelsplus and he assured me that they have the same quality requirements as OEM. I like the 300M style wheel and this is only vendor that I have found that provide these reps or I would have gone with the original 300M and bore the centerhub.

About a week ago I hit a large pot hole that shook the whole entire car and I thought I bent the front right wheel. I pulled over to the side and examine the wheel and saw no damage. Steering was fine with no vibration issues and just to be safe I took it over to my buddy shop to have them inspect the wheel. He said it was good.

Hope this helps in making your decision.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that oemwheelplus provides the bmw caps for all four wheels. They dont provide the //M sticker so you will have to order that from a bmw dealership. I ordered it from Tischer.

Thanks for the help Daripper! I'm guessing you also ordered the TPMS through them as well? Your X is my motivation to touch my wife's SUV :D...

Nice mod. I'm new to the board. Any new mods. to the x5 lately? I have works in mod. my 08' 3.0si.

Thanks for the write-up.

Daripper 08-16-2010 12:51 PM

No problem. I enjoy helping out my fellow BMW owners as much as I can. The only recent mod that I did was change out the halogen lights to LEDs on the bottom of the doors, tailgate and license plate. Followed Epacy thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/x5-e70-forum/74672-rd-leds-installed.html

My next big mod will be changing out the rear tail lights for the LCI update . Phattbam did it and it looks great. Thats about it for now.

Hello, new to this forum. Just got a 2011 X5d and I have installed these flares and a set of 21's, really looks great. I want to change my exhaust tips. Dealer not very helpful, do you have the part number of what you used. Aero kit looks great BTW

8ball 05-15-2011 10:03 PM

He's is a 2010 so was easy to cut out the hole for the exhaust. 2011's don't have the outline for it.

mx69 05-16-2011 11:13 AM

So how much did this run you. Im trying to do the same thing to mine. I have a 2011 35d. Does those new exhaust tips give you better sound? Man sweet ride. Let me know where u got the parts please.

- DaRip

Those wheels look very nice, I have few questions and if you could answer them I appreciate that.

I was wondering what the Offset was for the rear? if you know the numbers, would you mind sharing?

Center Bore was 74.1 right? Means that you did not have to buy any Hub ring?

quality overall after few months? have you had any vibrations, balancing issues, etc? ( Iread the previous posts you said no, but any unpleasant news since then)

The biggest question is the installation, did they scratch any surface during installation? Was it a toucless mounting machine?

TPMS that you bought, was it aftermarket? How much was it and brand name?

Thanks in advance.

The aerokit paint is pretty close to matching my factory paint but I'm not satisfied. Going to be calling the shop that painted and see if they can do a better job. In the sunlight its a shade off.

Thanks,

DaRip

Nice work! I just got the kit and wanted to know if you used the glue kit, also? How long did it take to install the kit? Thanks, David
