tips arches and 214's a busy day

I spent the afternoon installing the goodies on my 35d, I am very happy with the results. Now it looks exactly like my 07 4.8is :)

Got more pix? Very nice...

Looks great. Did you get flares specifically for the 35d or were they ones made for the gas versions. DaRipper noted that his had one hole that didn't match up in the front.

Westy 03-25-2010 02:18 PM

Here's a couple more. I have to say the arches were alot easier than I thought, the rivet tool is a must. I am not 100% satisfied with the tip alignment, I fought with the passenger side for some time, it sticks out alittle more than the drivers side. Next sunny day I'll see if I can get it any better.

Yes, they were for the gas version and yes, the one rivet doesn't line up so you lose a rivet. I contemplated drilling it out but decided that 8's enough its quite secure and doesn't affect appearance. Also, my dealer didn't have the 35d variants and wanted a fortune, so I opted to get them from a dealer in FL for a great price. PM if your interested.

wch X5 03-25-2010 02:39 PM

Thanks for confirming. I have the flares that I had on my old '07 4.8 (Sapphire Black like yours). I'm going to install them in a couple of weeks when I am sure we finished with snow in the Northeast.

I would agree that 8 should be more than enough to keep them in place. I am going to out a rubber block in them to keep water out.

nice work, that is one clean machine... my white gets dirty after only a few days regardless.. I can only imagine that black. Is that the sapphire, jet or carbon black?

Westy 03-25-2010 03:11 PM

Thanks rh71, its saphire black. My 07 was as well, and being on the west coast, as long it doesn't rain it stays pretty clean which means it's dirty all winter and spring :)

Nice work!

Hey, I work in Langley BC

h2daizzo 03-25-2010 07:38 PM

Hey Westy,

Its funny you mention that the passenger side tip stuck out a little further. I had the same issue. I contemplated messing with it, but I managed to check my OCD and just get over it. The difference is not much and probably only noticeable to the owner.

Looks good.

PasPar2 03-25-2010 09:05 PM

looks good - where did you get 214's from? oem or aftermarket? thanks

Westy 03-25-2010 11:15 PM

There oem, kept them when I traded in my 07 4.8i

SeanmacM5 03-26-2010 04:05 AM

Your car looks great. I have an 09 35d that I also upgraded with 214's, running boards and the wheel arch extensions.

I wanted to put on the same exhaust tips as you. Where did you get them and what's involved in installing them?

Thanks

E70x5 03-26-2010 09:34 AM

They are available thru parts dept at any BMW dealership. I thinks they are around $400. Just cut the old pipes and install and attatch by clamps.

Westy 03-26-2010 01:17 PM

Thats right, price varies from dealer to dealer, Install is fairly easy if you have a sawzall or cut off wheel. I paid $350 + shipping.

EdmBimmer 03-26-2010 02:22 PM

Can anyone provide me BMW numbers for the wheel arches?

OP - Your ride looks sweet!:thumbup:

Westy 03-26-2010 06:09 PM

The arch part #'s that I got from my dealership was 51-77-0-421-056

Hi,

If I may ask, what has been your overall impression of trading in a "relatively new" 2007 4.8 for the diesel. What do you think of the differences in performance.

Do you think it was worth the cost (depreciation on the old, and advantages of the fuel economy on the new) I have an 07 4.8 and am wondering when trading it in would make the most financial sense.

Thanks.

Westy 03-27-2010 06:11 PM

Overall I am very satisfied. There is surely a difference in the characteristics of the 35d vs the 4.8i. My 07 didn't have 3rd row or auto leveling rear suspension and from my experience 500 miles so far, the 35d feels much less sporty in terms of its handling, the 4.8i felt much more agile. Now this could be totally in my head but the 35d doesn't feel like its has a quick a steering ratio, nor does it feel as happy to throw into a high speed corner like the 4.8i did. With the 19" michelins that the 35d came with it certainly felt as if it had more body roll, now with the 214's its better but still not on par with the 4.8i.

Now as far as performance, the diesel is a completely different animal, the 4.8i was always ready with power on demand with super fast response to throttle tip in, the diesel on the other hand is not, I am familiar with turbo vehicles and lag, once the turbos spool on the 35d you get going pretty good. Its just for lack of a better word different. On the highway I am content with the passing power, it's not as fast as the 4.8i passed 80mph but it still moves pretty good. So I guess to sumarize, it is not equal to the 4.8i in terms of handling performance, well at least that is my opinion compared to my 07 but the biggest reason I bought the 35d was for fuel consumption. And I am simply amazed at how good it is, I am getting far better mileage and that fact that diesel where I live is cheaper than 87 octane regular gas. All in all, I'd say unless your going to be driving the autobahn or around a race track, these differences in performance make up in economy, they do for me anyways.

Feel free to pm me with any other questions. Another decision factor for me was my 07 4.8i was pretty sparse with sport, activity, premium where as the new 35d is almost loaded.

rh71 03-28-2010 08:13 AM

^ good info... interesting that both have adaptive drive but body roll feels different?

Edge647 03-28-2010 04:24 PM

OK, now I'm really ready for my summer shoes. Great pics!

From what I understand my 07 didn't have adaptive drive. This is the sport button by the emergency break button ? I really have to put more miles on my 35d before I make a final decision, but the 35d does feel like its heavier. However it may all be in my head. I've not looked at the weight numbers on how the diesel engine compares the all aluminum 4.8i maybe there's a couple extra hundred pounds there.... I am still enjoying every excuse to drive though.
