M-Sport Pkg Stone Chips
 

Several people in this thread below complain about stone chips to the lower body/rear quarter panel area on the M-Sport package. Do those of you here with the MS pkg have the same experience? Seems like this is excessive wear or a defect that should be a warranty covered item.

OMG.

On one hand people complain about "those black plastic bumpers" and want them painted to match.


Now we hear people complaining about those painted parts getting chipped?!?!?!


I explicitly like the black bumpers that can be detailed without concern for chips- that will invariably occur on an SUV. (indeed any vehicle) Heck, easy to slap a new bumper skin on without a need for paint...

Absolutely NO WAY BMW should cover chips from road debris-

I've had it for over a month now. However it has all been city and highway driving only - it has not been on any unsealed roads.
Isn't it the function of mudflaps to help minimise such damage...?

The technology to paint plastic has been around for decades, and other vehicles on the market have similar surfaces that don't see wear like this at 20 thousand miles let alone 2!

There is no excuse for this on a production BMW, they have testing engineers that should be on top of this.

If it did 'slip through the cracks' so to speak, I would expect them to repair the piece and apply a clear shield under warranty, or replace the trim with black plastic.

Agree. If my paint was wearing that quickly I would certainly complain! Fortunately, no such problems... fingers crossed.

This was my main concern with the M Sport from the beginning---it's a rock chip nightmare when you have everything painted. I don't think it's part of BMW's plans to have everyone clearbra all of these areas--that is overkill--hopefully BMW has some kind of fix though I don't know what they really could do to fix from a design stand point.

This is interesting and probably frustrating for those experiencing this issue.

I had the M sport package on both my 06 and 07 X3's and never had this problem, the coverage of the aero kits on both those cars was about the same as my X5 M.

I have 2,000 miles on the X5 now and have it detailed once a week; so far I haven't seen any damage to the paint. But, now that I know this I will look for someone that can "clear bra" those areas.

Anyone know who can do this in the San Diego, Ca or maybe Orange County area?

Put some 3M Clear bra over the parts getting chipped.

Get paint protection film from 3M or VentureShield. It is definitely a must-have for painted bumpers.

I have the same problem. 6000 miles on the X5M. Ordered new fender flares and rocker panels. Will have them painted, and fully clear bra'd before installing. Very frustrating on a 102,000 vehicle.
