Facelift X5: First Drive and Reviews thread
Creating this thread to post all first drives and reviews since they have started trickling in as a result of international media launch. 35i and 40d engines were available for 'first drive' to media.
40d is not for US. 2011 BMW X5 xDrive 40d - First Drive: |

Took the 50i for spin today. I like the 400 hp TT power. It had the sports pack+sports activity pack. You guys will like the 0-60 on this. 8-speed tranny is good.

Sounds like fun....any pictures??.....what does sports pack plus the sports activity pack mean?do you mean adaptive drive? and in another thread you mentioned the white LED lights are optional...are they orderable? i.e. can I ask my dealer to add it on somehow? is there a order code or number?

As mentioned in other thread, I am trying to find out the real deal with coronas.
The window sticker lists sports pack and sports activity pack separately. Sports activity pack by itself includes option 225 which is 'Sports suspension delete'. Did not take much pics as light was bad. Here is a crappy pic. ;) I have another date tomorrow. Will report back. |
Cool ..really interested to know
how the 50i in terms of smoothness / acceleration goes compared to 35d ...in Aus we get a slightly more highly tuned version of the 35d which makes the 0-62 MPH at 7 sec flat ..its pretty quick ..but knocking 1.5 seconds off that again with 50i must just feel great !!
Also keen to know how the ingear acceleration feels compared to 35d ..say from 40MPH to 70 MPH - as that's the sweet spot for overtaking manuveurs etc ... plus - is it easy to lauch from start ? is there are noticable lag? my 35d has a tendancy to stall for a fraction of a sec until things light up and go ..not great when you are looking to squeeze a gap or burn off from lights .... any insight on these things would be great ...thanks very much.. |
I did not notice any lag on 50i. 35d vs. 50i is apples to oranges comparison. There is lot of power on 50i for passing. The engine also has nice idle exhaust note. Its great to launch from start. 35d has some lag on 0-60 if you compare to 50i.

Thanks LeMans -
you pretty much answered what I thought ... 50i not officially on Aus website yet ..but when it gets up I'm going to take a look for end of year order ..I don't do many Miles so don't really care about economy ... and the 35d is not that great on milage anyway given I only do very short runs ..its rated at 8.8 l / 100km ..but I'm reading more like 15.8 l / 100km ..so its just not working for me ...

I've noticed that on some pictures I see 8 shortcut buttons, and on some others only 6... So what is the deal here? Are US models different from european, or were those pre-LCI pics?
I personally find 6 shortcuts on a low side... 8 would be an improvement! |

I also see pet divider in some of the pictures... Again, not for USA market ?! |

Got a quote for new 50i yesterday down here in Australia ..
$153k drive-away (that's about $140k US) .... you guys have it GOOOD in the US :yikes: no wonder all you X's are optioned to the hilt ;) For that money I could have an X5M and if the boot space was big enough park an X1 in there for the kids :D and still have change for my first speeding ticket :wow:
|
It's nice,
But for sure for me if changing the X, buying the new 7 series is a much nicer choice. |

Not sure if this one has been posted but it's listed as a recent review on Edmunds.

For those of you who are coming from an e70 4.8 that has the Sport Pack (ie has the true "stiffer suspension" as we know it) with 20"s and getting an '11 with Sport Pack with 20"s but no Adaptive Drive: is there a noticeable difference in handling between the "older" Sport and the "newer" one ?

Ok so I finally drove the 2 new TT engines today--and did them back to back. The salesman let me drive without him being in them. I drove a non-sport 35i and then a non-sport 50i. Although I was curious what the handling would be like with the 20s at least I got to test the engines. All I have to say is it's no contest on performance. I launched both of them from a dead stop probably 6-7 times each. There is a noticeable lag on the 35i---the 50i just blows through the gears. If it were for a wife or you really didn't want to spend the extra $ for the 50i or wanted slightly better MPG I could see how the 35i would suffice (and if you are coming from a less performing SUV). Other than that the 50i is the way to go. Interesting the sales guy said the residuals have really jumped the past 60 days on the X5 thus the demand is pretty high and lease payments lower.

A man after my own heart :). It also helps with sharp, ahhh, lane changes. I had an E53 for 7yrs and I would get a lot of body roll with that too. I learned how to control it without any problems, but others who would drive my car would freak out when it happened to them and usually oversteer as a result. I added adaptive drive to my 35d and it was money well spent. |
