problems with my 05 x5 4.4

recently, engine check trouble was diagnosed as 3 valves mis firing , needing replacement, 2 power steering hoses leaking, and two axle boots replacements. total around $3k. I do not have any extended warranty and car has only 54k miles. I am shocked! Wouldnt be valves prob covered under power train warranty?

Is it worth seeking 2nd opinion from Dinan or private shops?

Please advise asap.
Thanks

Did you get a written estimate? Please scan it and post it.

For $3000 including 2 power steering hoses and two axle boots I don't think they are doing a valve job too. (Replacing valves is a cylinder head rebuild.)

You need more concrete and definitive information for us to go on: exact symptoms, how car is behaving, what codes they've downloaded, PRECISELY what parts they say need replacement.

You "location" - listed as USA- isn't very helpful either.

A second opinion- Dinan or (and I am guessing you are in the South San Francisco Bay since that is where Dinan is) other indy shop- there are MANY in the bay area

More details....

thanks Ard:)

I am in Sfo Bay area, and use Allison Mountain View for my regular service.

Car was jerky, with low power, barely made to dealer ship.

I'll see what kind of paper work, that I could get, scan and post for opinion, would be much appreciated.

More so, any advice and referral would be a huge favor.

thanks

[rant on]

How can you take the car to a BMW dealer, pay a few $00 for a diagnosis, AND NOT GET THE DETAILS OF WHAT WORK YOU ARE BEING ASKED TO SPEND $3000 ON?!?!

At the very least, a statement of codes/GT1 errors that they found, the parts they are saying need replacement (with part numbers) and the labor for each task.

[rant off]

The are not doing a 'valve job'... Likely you have a bad CPS causing misfires on three cylinders. Plus a few leaky hoses and CV boots they found on the lift..

I do all my own work, and live 150 miles away, so I have no referrals.

I'd say get the motor running right- if it is at allison, then maybe see what exactly they want for that part of the repair.

Finally, 54k miles on a 2005- the car is out of warranty, right? 4 years/50k miles...

Thanks again.

I am glad I posted here.

Yes, car is out of warranty and I did not buy extended warranty!
My service guy is off today.

I'll get all those detail write up tomorrow and post for some evaluation.

But one thing is disturbing, on these BMW, we thought it was electronics that cause problems and expensive repairs, not the engines! and here we go!

Your problem does not seem unusual, just a lack of detail and a clear willingness by the dealer to gouge you.
