Slime and TPMS
Has anyone actually used Slime to repair a flat tire.
And if so, did it take out the TPMS sensor or were you able to clean it off with no ill effect to the sensor? I'm ditching the RFT's before heading out on a 3K mile road trip and I'm thinking about getting a Slime kit "just in case" over ordering a spare tire kit. I have the "upgraded' BMW assist package so worst case I call for a tow. Like if I have a compete blow out or something which isn't likely anyway.. But ya never know... :D |
Does the upgraded BMW assist still provide a free tow if you have taken off the RFTs?

A free tow to the BMW dealer- if they are closed they will bring the car there the next business day. Then you hope the dealer stocks that tire- which they will not since it isn't a runflat.
(I carry a full size tire in my M5 (which is designed to use a pump and slime)... it has saved me many times. Rather not wait for a tow truck, and get hauled to a dealership in the middle of the night. Jack it up, on my way in 20 minutes.) Anything I can do to rely LESS on other entities (BMW assist, roadside assist, a dealer stocking the correct tire) make me feel more secure. |

Just thought I'd see if anyone has used slime and if so what if any problems they may have had. |
I tried using the pump and slime provided in my M5 once - it didn't work. I don't think the slime ever came out of the canister.
I have since moved to carrying a jack and tire plug/patch kit in my cars without spare tires (which is almost all of them at this point). I have great success with the patch kit on the M5. Fixed two flats with it and then drove it to the tire dealer for a proper repair (or replacement). BMW has a great (although overpriced) jack kit for their sedans that fits in the side trunk compartment on my M5 so I don't lose any trunk space. In the X5 I have the jack and patch kit in the storage area under the cargo floor. The only situation I would be SOL with this setup is a complete tire blowout and I haven't experienced one of those in many years. |
Tire plug kit and small cig lighter plug in pump is much better... If that can't fix it neither can slime. The plug kit can actually fix more leaks than the slime kit can anyways.

I guess on could carry a small bottle of soapy water, not sure how effective that would be though... |
I also vote for a puncture kit and small pump...we've used one twice on long m'cycle rides, cross country, (not my scoot, but I helped, lol!)
In every puncture I've had in car tires, or scoot tires, for the past 47 years, the nail or sharp object, has always been readily apparent. No need for soap. Modern puncture kits work like a charm and will get you to where you need to go. Slime practicability is a dream/myth in terms of real world fix, from the three times I've seen it used... GL, mD |
