Painted my 214's Black ..

2 Attachment(s)
I thought I would toughen up my ride as I was getting sick of it looking like other X5's on the road. Painting the 214's black has made a real difference. I matched them to a similar finish that the roof racks have. The painter told me it's 3% satin if that means anything to anyone :)

What do you all think ?

Looks like a pearl white--must be custom.

rh71 06-05-2010 08:45 PM

love the way that shines in the light... satin works! :D

Thanks all for the comments .. My goal was to make it look tough rather than a family car.

Colour is Moonstone (Individual). Moonstone is awesome in sunlight as its slightly metallic and different hues come out in different lighting conditions, but can look like undercoat on a cloudy day :( (See attached picture)

Mods are:-

- Lowered using H&R 2.00"(F) & 1.20"(R)
- 30mm H&R Spacers all round
- Colour Coded almost everything
- Black Mesh & Black Kidney Grills
- Tinted Windows (30%)
- Painted 214's

Am thinking about tinting back lights or buying some of the LED ones Iv seen kicking around on eBay.

That's about it really.

Thanks for looking !!

Dieselgeek 06-05-2010 10:34 PM

looks really nice. did they use special paint to do the rims or is it plain automotive paint?

TaMbALoLoNg 06-05-2010 10:45 PM

Nice job, i think its lowered just right

335xray 06-05-2010 11:00 PM

Wow! Looks awesome. Love the Moonstone, love the 3% satin black. Your X looks great.

He used a special paint for Mag Wheels but don't ask me what it is sorry .. He mentioned to me that completely flat is not recommended so he mixed / applied 3% satin into the paint mix. Apparently 4% satin is the norm so I went a little less than norm.

Also thanks for all the comment guys. Appreciate it :D

Cheers Kman

Wow....I love your X5! I want mine to look like yours! lol

Check out some pics of my X5:
http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...y-x5-215s.html

We have some similarities.....white on black rims.

I really like the fact you had everything painted the same color as the body. How complicated was that?

Did you have a body shop remove all the black plastic parts and paint them with the BMW factory paint so the match would be perfect?

How much did you spend on having all the black components painted white?

I have a bunch of other questions regarding the paint work you had done as I would like to go the same route and have all my black plastic painted as well.

What about the drop.....is the ride very rough? I find that the combination of the 21" rims and the run flats make for a very rough ride so I thought dropping it would take it over the top....what's your take on that?

Do you have 30% all around? Ceramic tints?

Sorry for all the questions but I really like what you did!

CarsRmyVICE 06-06-2010 09:54 PM

WoW. I like your mods. Very well done.

poleposition 06-07-2010 09:09 AM

Love it. Moonstone is an awesome color. Ive seen it in person but never on an X5. Looks fantastic.

Ok so my wheels are at the paintshop now. I wanted the EXACT same finish as that. I told him I wanted "satin". He had not clue what I meant so I showed him the picture of your car and explained to him I want 3% satin. He looked at me like I was crazy. He has no idea what 3% satin means. He said he would paint the wheels black and then either clear them with gloss, matte, or ultra matte clear? So I told him to do it matte :( I know its not going to turn out right. I wish there was a definitive way of asking for a satin black finish but there are so many different texture gradients.

X_outpost 06-07-2010 09:56 PM

That is one clean X5.
It's got some classy mod, without trashing the brand.
That's how people should mod a bimmer.
Most heavily modded bimmers I've seen looks like Japanese cars.

OK here goes. I rang my painter and he said this. Black was normal wheel paint . Clear coat was normal gloss dulled down with a flattening agent called ALSA which apparently is an American product. If you apply 4% of this Alsa to the clear coat you get full Matt Black. 2% gives you Satin Black. Mine is 3%. The reason he uses this Alsa product is so he can control how Matt the overall look becomes by applying more or less of it. Hope this helps.

Does this make more sense. I apologise as my description may have led you in the wrong direction initially :(

Cheers and thanks. I agree, you can OVERDO a car so easily. Japanese and asians are very good at it but I understand, because thats what they like. I personally like to keep the natural lines of the car and just enhance them with as few mods as possible like yourself.

Cheers and Thanks

Love the color...tasteful overall theme. Nicely done

JoshGM 06-08-2010 10:13 AM

Yep the car looks menacing!... as you said "not looking like any other X5"!... One question is this white... or its lighting of the pic?... if its a MOD its really good... the car looks going towards grey!... :-)

MPowerFarmer 06-08-2010 08:34 PM

Are your kidney grills just raw black plastic?

durnie 06-09-2010 01:59 AM

Car looks great.
Any problems with the 30mm spacers? I'm told it's not all that legal in Aus, more concerns with ride and handling.

Although I like the look, it does tend to scream "spoiled 18 year old behind the wheel". I guess I'm just getting old. :)

roadkillrob 10-04-2010 05:09 PM

Very nice - just got my AW 35i and once it get's through the winter on 19's, going to put black 214's on it - was going back and forth on black vs gunmetal or darker silver, but your pictures have sealed the deal!

BKBMW 10-04-2010 09:37 PM

You achieved your goal, this looks amazing! Personally, I would stop where you are so as not to go over the top. How is the ride since you lowered it?

Forster4.8is 10-05-2010 11:56 PM

I love the finish on your wheels! Car looks awesome! Can we get some pictures of your X's fat ass?! haaha

That is a bad asss car dude! One of the top two for sure our there!

Naz24 10-09-2010 07:00 PM

I know everyone likes it, but i'd have to disagree, i think the spacers are just too wide.

still nice though

Installed LED Tail Lights !!!!

1 Attachment(s)
Hey All

Well I had a small rear accident (or should I say it had me) and was at the Panel Shop and saw my lights out of the car. Decided it was a great time to install some LED tai lights. I saw them on eBay and thought, lets do it.

I'm glad I did. The tinting matched the car colour.

Merry XMAS to all.....

Kman

roadkillrob 12-24-2010 02:35 PM

My 214's are off for the winter and 2 have a little rash on them (thanks to the missus!), so I think they will become black this winter - love the look and then the brake dust won't annoy me as much either!

EVIL SSP 12-24-2010 04:23 PM

How do you like the new tail lights?

Jeg Norge 12-24-2010 04:28 PM

It was a friend so very little actually. Was quotes $2K Aussie to get it done though which I thought was a little excessive. It cost me some slabs of beer :D

I have 20mm spacers in excellent condition that I can sell you if you want. H&Rs w/bolts. I'll check the mileage on them if your interested.

mikeross 01-21-2014 07:39 PM

truck looks great... I heard a lot of negative reviews on the 2" drop in the front from h&r.

How is the ride with that much drop? Is it really bouncy?
