HD radio signal

I dont remember getting HD radio as an option (unless its standard)
there's only 1 radio station i like listening to, and when i put in the freq. it brings up the station name with HD next to it.

Driving around town, i noticed it tends to get louder then softer then louder (thought it was due to my speed) but this happened when i was at the light. I finally noticed when it gets louder, the HD sign appears, and when softer, it goes away. Can i disable this? or am i doing something wrong?

Thanks
Franklin

The change in loudness between the analog and digital signal is normal, but seems to be dependent on the station transmitter. In my area, some stations are opposite of what you describe. Anyway, you can disable HD radio reception in the settings under the blue menu, IIRC.

Wow, that's annoying. Perhaps BMW should try to normalize the volume somehow.

The volume difference is due to the particular station broadcasting, making it had to normalize the volume without hurting the fidelity and dynamic range of the HD -- which is a major reason for having HD. If you are in an area where the HD signal keeps fading-out so that the AM signal has to take over, it probably makes sense to just switch the HD off. I typically just use the analog, since most of the AM stations are news and talk.

When I am on a trip returning to Chicago, AM 780 often would switch between analog and HD when I first got into range. And in the case of AM 780, there was not only a volume difference, but a timing difference of a second or two. Now that was distracting!
