Had a Droid X for a few days that works well in case anyone was wondering... I returned the phone though cause I don't get 3G that well in the house. Yay for forward compatibility in an older car.

**UPDATE****
OK....so....phone works. BIL also has a BMW and stopped by dealer to get something...asked about the phone and they told him the SAME thing they told me...if it is NOT on the "official BMW list" DO NOT USE...will mess up on board computer?? Something like it will work--but keeps scrolling though something and over time (year or more) will "blow out the computer"??? SHOOT??? Anybody know about this? I cant risk that......so I need a new phone? |

I've used a couple of phones on my cars, and they were/are NOT on the list, and I have not had any issues doing that. Anyone who has, please correct me. If a phone syncs properly where you could see your contacts list on the car display, and make/receive phone calls, you should be fine using that phone. I really don't see how that could ultimately mess up the car computer, whether the phone is on the list or not. If your current phone is now working properly, you don't need another one (unless of course that's your "excuse" to get a newer fancier phone in which case just ignore my post and go for one). |
Thanks....rather spend the $ on anything else than a new phone since mine is new. I called BMW USA and they said the same thing--it will screw up my BMW computer??? The phone works fine...I see all addresses etc. Hum....gosh....ugggg!!!

It seems unlikely to me that a BT phone could cause any sort of serious problem for your car. Probably the worst thing that could happen is excessive communication between the BT module and your phone, due to differing implementations of the protocols, which could impact the responsiveness of iDrive. But that seems unlikely since your phone is functioning as expected.
Bluetooth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I think BMW is being overly cautious with their statement. |

If using a phone that is not on BMW's list caused any issues, we would have heard about that on one or more of the many BMW forums. I certainly have not. You might want to do a search on that. |
