About to buy CPO 07 4.8: Opinion needed on service history and price

I've spent the past few weeks reading through all of the archives to learn as much as possible. Great forum!!!

I am close to pulling the trigger on a 2007 4.8i CPO with the following specifications:

$42,400
Black Sapphire / Tan
29.5k miles
7/07 Build
3rd Row Seat
Premium Package
Premium Sound Package
Sport Package (19 inch wheels)
Technology Package

I requested the service history and it came back with the following (outside of normal maintenance)

2,502 miles: Fuel tank leakage diagnostic module DMTL / system permanent malfunction
3,947 miles: Fuel Filler Flap, fuel tank leaking
5,4888 miles: Idling quality uneven under all operating conditions
11,284 miles: Navigation CD/DVD destination input incorrect/incomplete/ reading
14,583 miles: Drive cable/cable (SHD panorama sunroof) cracked/broken/torn off
19,161 miles: Glove box poorly adapted/fitted; multifunctional steering wheel poor finish
21,285: Drive unit for power height adjustment of front seat permanent failure
28,843: Washer fluid reservoir, windscreen washer system leaking; Parking lamp/daytime running light (bulb/led) permanent failure

I will do a PPI if I decide to move forward with the purchase. The car seems to be in great condition to my eye.

Should the service history concern me? Does it seem like a fair deal?

Thanks in advance. Looking forward to becoming a contributor to the forum at some point.

Seems like a lot of quality issues with it off the bat--but you are buying a 1st year model run so ithere's a greater chance of things to go wrong. As far as price it seems fair.

I can speak from experience since I currently own two first year model cars (04 545, 07 x5 4.8) I have had numerous issues with both but BMW has made them right. You are going to get 1 year of warranty which covers every little thing and 2 years with the CPO which will cover all mechanical issues. If you are going to put the miles on these cars I am sure you will take advantage. If you are only going to be putting on 10k a year you may find yourself paying for things outside of the warranty because you will not have "wore the car out enough" My 545 just slipped out of warranty coverage and I only have 60k miles on it and I have to bring it in for 3 errors showing up (active steering which was already completely replaced, Emissions, and leaking washer which was already replaced) I am hoping that I can get a courtesy repair done since I am only 1 month out of warranty. I have done 7k oil changes and 50k trans and dif fluid changes so I hope they understand I take care of my cars. Plus I am looking at getting a MY11 x5 TT priced at 80k and I hope I can use that for a bargining chip. FYI The black book(aka auction prices) for that car you are looking at which is almost identical to my current one is $34,500. I would haggle since they are looking at about 5k profit on top of the CPO. Last but not least, point out every issue at delivery so you can get it fixed before you take delivery.

what does that mean???

looking at autotrader there are a bunch of CPO'd X5s that are listed over $40K....

am in the market for the same vehicle myself - what is a good price for a CPO X5?

A price with a 3 in front of it. No one is buying these cars, dealers sit on them for 60-90 days. Don't be afraid to walk out or throw prices as such. If you buy this car even with a price that starts with a 3, and decide tomorrow your going to sell it and put it on craiglist, you won't get a single call. It's taugh!

Isn't he getting 3 years of CPO ? The build date is 7/07 so probably put into service shortly after.

Did you negotiate on price? I spent a lot of time at 4 different dealers in DC metro area trying to haggle on price. On an X with not many options I was able to get down $1,500 where as one that was fully loaded (3.0si) I was able to only get down $700.00.

I think most dealers in DC area are moving the X5's. We didn't get as hard hit with the recession though as other areas so YMMV..

Thanks for all the replies. I live in the NYC area and have been hard pressed to find a low mileage, 4.8i with all the features we require for less than 40K. I have found a few but they usually are missing key features or are not one of the color combos that work for us. My gut tells me that I am at the upper range of the price spectrum. I can live with spending a few thousand more provided I get a good car that is trouble free for the next several years.

Generally I have seen dealers negotiate ~$1k off of asking prices. As bd3500 mentioned, less so on fully loaded vehicles.

Dealers in the NYC area tend not to negotiate becuase they know people that live in the city don't know how to drive out of the area.... (A semi-joke...)

they also know (as to many dealers in large metro areas) that there is a large pool of buyers that will usually meet their price. They know that the CPO, the 'dealer' tag, the in-house financing options, can all help mover overpriced cars.

How does anyone really know HOW much cars ultimately sell for? it really all depends on the specific deal and less on how optioned the car is...

IMO
