Painting side moldings?
Has anyone painted this side moldings (the black piece on the doors)? I'd like to do it but before I take it to the shop, I'm trying to find out if it's help on by double side tape or something else? Thanks

I am pretty sure it is V Strong double sided sponge tape........good luck getting them off if to paint as it does leave a lot of the tape behind IF you manage to get them off....

I just ordered mine in the mail (M-sport moldings) and will have them installed in about a week at the body shop. There is double sided tape and then every 8-10" or so, there are little studs/locators that insert into the actual door panel. The factory BMW paintable pieces are primered gray, don't stand as far away from the door (not as tall) as the black ones, and are not textured but rather smooth.
I'll be posting pictures of my install when I get it done. Feel free to shoot me a PM if you need the part numbers from Tischer BMW. My local dealership wanted $400 for the 4 pieces, and I bought them from Tischer for around $200 shipped. |
For what it's worth the sheet metal on the doors is pretty thin and they ding remarkably easily. Significantly thinner than any other BMW I've ever owned, (including my old '05 E53 X5). About 3 months after I picked up the E70, someone opened their SUV door into my rear driver's side door and the damage was pretty surprising.
Point being, I wouldn't go out of my way to decrease the small amount of protection the door moldings provide. My 2001 E46 330 is built like a tank by comparison. |
