How do I adjust/re align the headlights?

And what about high beams? Are they adjustable as well?

why would you want/need to do that? The Xenon (aka HID) headlights come with auto-leveling, to prevent blinding of oncoming drivers when rear of the car is loaded, as well as when going over the hills. You should NOT be messing around with the headlights as we are talking public safety here, and if something went wrong, take it to the dealer instead.

Unless you have set-up a level headlight-aiming area, measuring it out and carefully marking it with tape/paint, you shouldnt mess with them, particularly Xenons which can easily blind oncoming traffic if misadjusted.

Upon on further searching the net, I found out how to adjust it vertically.

It'll be done carefully as I'll go through the instruction step by step. Just need the right tools.

That's cool, but why do you need to do it? Is the autoleveling not working?

Had a bodyshop work that needed the headlights to be taken out in order to fix the bumper area, but the headlight beams are misaligned after the job. Might even blind the oncoming traffic, so I'm readjusting it.

If the E70 headlights work like the E53's, there maybe a misconception about the "auto-leveling" feature in X5 head lights. On an E53 they don't actually level themselves in an absolute sense. They adjust themselves within a fairly narrow range to compensate for the suspension not being level. IOW their "auto-leveling" adjustments are relative to an initial manually adjusted setting. Which on an E53 is extremely simple to change with the two large plastic knobs on the back of each head light housing.

In a previous life.... I foolishly believed that an authorized BMW dealer would properly install/adjust my E53's headlights after replacing one of the bulbs - WRONG. On coming traffic immediate started 'flashing' me even when I was already on dims. :( So I drove the X5 up to a flat wall and realized that the headlight BMW had 'repaired' was set to blind oncoming traffic. It was way too high and a little to the left. I adjusted it down and in. Then checked it by driving toward it in the ranch truck on various nearby roads.

I believe that's how it works in the E70 as well.

The manual says it compensates for the load put on the suspension.

Non-xenon models have a manual height adjustment roller by the lighting control knob or so the manual says.

I haate to resurrect an old thread like this but how did you do this? I am in a similar situation. I realize that I have to be careful so that I don't blind oncoming drivers but my head if tad are aimed way too low after having them replaced. I brought it to the dealer and they only made it worse. Where are the vertical adjustment screws? I see 2 white adjustment screws on the side of the unit but they don't seem t work for vertical adjustment. How did you do it?

thank you. I found 2 adjustment screws but they don't seem to be working for vertical adjustment. I gave them a 1/2 turn with no results. Either I didn't turn it enough or the 2 I tried are the wrong screws.

mine is '01 4.4i, my originals weren't far seeing as I have to step on my brakes whenever I confront oncoming vehicles...even cars!
Got a xenon 8000k H1 (if i'm correct)but after fixing, i am faring no better.

My passenger side is much higher than the driver. They both move up & down when I start the car so I know the system works but how do I lower the passenger side?

The headlights on my 2012 X5 are aimed a little too low. Has anyone figured out how to adjust the headlights vertically on a E70 X5?

I have a 2007 X5 E70 with Xenon headlights, but having same issue...passenger side is lower and driver side might be a bit too high. I tried the link listed above and the pictures the link shows are for a "car" not an "SAV" or X5. Does anyone have pictures and instructions for an X5 E70 specifically?

Just for clarification...if you're referring to the links in posts #11 & #12 above...the images are of an e53 X5 (the 1st generation X5)...not a car or BMW "sedan"...but also a "SAV" just like the e70 X5 (2nd generation X5).


To be clear, I don't own an e70, I own an e53...but BMW design principles usually don't stray far even between generations and especially within the same generational "cousins". For an example, I went to the internet just to look for e70 X5 headlights...and I can bet dollars to donuts that the vertical and horizontal adjustments can be made by the 2 white screws seen in the pic below on these 2012/2013 X5 headlamp assembly.

Does your xenon headlamps look like the one below? If yes, then look for those white screws. Then pull up to your garage door or wall...and stop about 10-15 feet back...then turn on the headlights and adjust the lights higher or lower...or left/right. :)
