35i noisy at startup

My new 35i is quite noisy when I start it up cold. It sounds like a noisy chatter. Not sure if this is normal. Has anyone else noticed this? My wife actually said my new ride sounded "bad" when I left this morning?!?!?!?

I have the same noise, which I believe is a by-product of direct fuel injection.

Mine makes the same sound, don't sound normal but they say it is.

I started up my not-quite-two-week-old X5 this morning with the door open so I could listen for this, and sure enough.. Yes, it sounds like something is broken, but it goes away quickly. Sounds like a rattle or something.

Does it sound like a clatter? Or maybe a box of marbles just after the starter stops?

E53 X5s have this problem too but I've never learned why.

It sounds like it's about to blow up.

ukwildcat 09-17-2010 02:16 PM

Mine sounds more like a clatter - almost like in the old days (or on very old cars) when it would sputter when the turned it off or on.

It CERTAINLY sounds like it doesn't belong, but it does go away quickly, and with so many folks talking about it, it sounds like it belongs. :)

I wish I knew what it was, though..

Does everyone who experience this "symptom" see their engine's initial RPM shoot to near 2,000 before coming back down to ~7-800 over the course of about 15 secs? This would help to confirm if everyone has the same issue.
