Does the x5 get looks or attract attention??

Just Curious from the current owners. I am very excited to get mine and I was just wondering if pople get above average on any compliments, gas stations talks, thumbs up, heads turn? Just curious on the overall response from other people. I have a 335xi sedan black on black with 35% tinted windows and I NEVER get looks. I know this is a dumb question but just wondering.

kimg9582 08-31-2010 03:28 PM

not really especially since my X5 is all stock.

GoVols! 08-31-2010 03:30 PM

The main time that I get comments is when I'm at the station filling the X with the diesel pump. Dudes in big F-350's and Silverado's drive by half snickering that "you know you're putting diesel in your bimmer?". I say yeah and a 5 minute conversation ensues.

motordavid 08-31-2010 04:27 PM

My '01 E53, gets a few looks on occasion: it still looks very good for a decade old design, it's in very good cosmetic condition,
and it has that Roundel on the front and back. I think some E70s look great; some look like soccer wagons, imo.

If no one looked, or wondered "what year is that", and was surprised to hear "it's 9 years old", I would not care...it is/has been a Titz car for us.

2010X5d 08-31-2010 04:31 PM

Mostly at the gas stations ;)

Most of the times at the gas stations - commenting that I am filling the wrong fuel :)
Once I say its a diesel X5 then the conversation starts .

Edge647 08-31-2010 05:04 PM

+1 for the gas station diesel comments/chats.

Although, I get some looks from other X5 drivers when they see the Vredestein treads.

But at the end of the day, the streets are littered with X5's (atleast in Toronto).

BMWOO7 08-31-2010 05:18 PM

I actually tend to get quite the few looks coming down the road. I'm thinking mostly due to the Corona rings / Halos. Along with that, mine is Alpine White, so I think it enhances the Corona ring effect.

I don't even have LED's in them yet either!

In addition to that, before I had mine, I used to look at nice (the ones people take care of) BMW's and admire them, so I think people are noticing them in general.

It's a classic vehicle.

It did in 2001, and 2002, when it was a new concept. When I bought my E53 in 2003, that had pretty much ended, unless I was driving up-country in an area with no BMW dealers.

agreed, somebody thought my 2004 X5 had less than 10k miles (i have 83k now :D)

I get compliments all the time, but then again, i'm in college. It's a rare car to see on campus, especially up here in the middle of nowhere. If you mod your car correctly i think you can get looks

Nice to see another Big Red fan on the board ;) It's the right car for the weather up there :)

barbja 08-31-2010 05:48 PM

We turned the head of a guy in a Porsche Cayenne Turbo about a month ago. More than a 90 pan as he drove by. Get out!

His was about the same color as my PG. Perhaps he was wishing he had such a stylin' car as mine :).

ahh are you a fellow cornellian? if you come up to cornell, i have two friends each with black 4.8is, we can do a mini xoutpost meet

MPowerFarmer 08-31-2010 05:59 PM

Now that is murdered out on 214s it does, now I have to decide if I want to paint the calipers bright green...

rh71 08-31-2010 06:45 PM

- today a couple guys in their 20s were staring at me at the train station as they were stopped in traffic
- last year another guy at the gas station asked me what year mine was as he checked it out
- other male SUV drivers do look once in a while, the women couldn't care less - and other E70 owners - sometimes I wonder if they even know if they're driving the same car, they just go on about their day. ;)
- and I definitely still stare at it

Depends how much you do it up from stock as there are a ton out there already. I still don't even see that many with 214 wheels - definitely not even 1 in 10.

Same here---bought mine in '01 and people couldn't believe BMW had an SUV. Now, all X5's are dime a dozen. Let's be honest, unless you are rollin' in a Bugatti this topic is over.

4.6is Ryder 08-31-2010 08:51 PM

The biggest question I would get would be regarding the tires....people wanted to know why I put race tires on it. Those 87's wrapped in 315's were hella sweet......Phil

Yeah, did grad school there. The mini xoutpost meet sounds cool though I will probably not be driving from Cali ;)

BTW, on the topic itself, I do get occasional stares but no-one has approached me. As someone said, unless you are rolling in a Bugatti, Lambo, Ferrari etc., even Porsche's don't count out here in California, the topic is pretty much over.

BMWREXPENSIVE 08-31-2010 09:18 PM

Gonna irritate a lot of people with this, but I think the V8 and the sport activity with the fender flares and staggered 20" wheels look awesome. Otherwise X5s with stock 19" wheels and no flares look very very plain.

GAM3OVR 08-31-2010 09:20 PM

For looks I'd get a Range Rover Sport, or Porsche Cayenne.

nom3rcy 08-31-2010 09:33 PM

I get compliments on it, usually about how much better it looks than other X5s, and they ask if I have any exhaust mods (I don't).

Removal of the roof rack and lowering it, as well as keeping it extremely clean, makes it stand out in a crowd.

Just leaving the grocery store tonight, I started it up in the parking lot and a Grand Cherokee owner did a double, triple, then quadruple take as I drove away, then was looking at it driving down the street when he caught up to me. Must like em :)

MINIz guy 08-31-2010 10:24 PM

E53's and E70's are a dime a dozen here in my town. My mom has gotten some comments on our old diesel X5 up in north NJ, around Sussex County where there are less BMW's. With our Tasman Green X6, we have gotten a few more comments on it being a nice car. Our E53 is too stock looking to get comments, even with its mud flaps, red tinted tails, and blackout grills.

newmanium 08-31-2010 10:39 PM

I don't want attention, and haven't gotten any - silver, stock wheels, keep it a bit dirty, perfect. We like being anonymous.

I think you have to do fancy wheels and M body to get noticed.

No it was probably more like that Toyota Sienna commercial--you left your diaper bag on your roof. ;)

Richard in NC 08-31-2010 11:44 PM

A lady in a CRV took a long look at mine as she turned the corner in front of me.

Syndicate 09-01-2010 01:44 AM

A girlfriend of mine was sitting in the passenger seat and made the comment that a lot of people were looking at the car as we drove through town. From what I've noticed, the looks now come from women in their late 20's - 40's, soccer moms that are tired of their minivans, and business men. Conversely, the M3 got looks everywhere and compliments that ranged from 10 year olds to other sports car enthusiasts. To be honest I appreciate the subtle elegance of the X5 and want to keep it fairly stock. Definitely not a fan of the "baller" mods.

Roadster 09-01-2010 04:19 AM

My X5 is stock, if at all I would get a look, chances are that it's from a green treehugger that is commenting my diesel-guzzling SUV that will forever destroy our planet :dunno:
I'm still waiting for the first green guy to key my car, I know it will happen, just don't know when :gun:

GX5NY 09-01-2010 08:08 AM

yup the 4.8is gets looks and I get comments from ppl asking me why it looks a bit different than other X5s (the 3.0 they are used to seeing)

dpgx5 09-01-2010 09:29 AM

I usually see people on the highway as I pass point and see their mouths moving (good or bad) they are still talking :nanana: I've seen the double take as well. I've made mine a bit more different cause like most have said there a dime a dozen. The best question I get... What size are those rear tires? :D

JoshGM 09-01-2010 10:34 AM

As for me some guys can even come to the driver side to complement before going into 'how fast these machines go... 0 - 100km/h... blah blah blah!" I dont think its an African thing, even if there quite alot of X5s, X6s all over in my City people still RESPECT any BMW and loved by anything from sweet Sixteens to bored house wives who gets a hot lay from 'the guy who drives the only black X5 in town!"

One day I was taking a glass of Jack Daniels at some Cafe`, here comes some juicy thing, "hey is it you I always see in that Black X5 parked outside...?" with a wicked grin on my face I said.."Yap!" I offered her a bar stool... she went on talking about how she thinks X5s are sexy (It was news to me! Idont see sexy in X5s!) ... we went on and on glass after another... maybe I was drunk but I remember suggesting to her why couldnt she take a ride in it then... from there... well... huh...;)

Temonio 09-01-2010 11:12 AM

Not a "race stirrer" but i think I get looks moreso because of the fact that I'm a young black guy driving one. I love the double take. I have no idea what the thoughts or comments are from other folks, but I love the look. And this is when I'm Knoxville...which the economic hardships seemed to skip by.

When I go to visit my family in Charlotte...it stands out like a terd in a punchbowl. Can't wait for my mods...then I'll float higher. I love it.

MRV99 09-01-2010 09:11 PM

The only looks i get are when i am heading to iowa on I88 and i am doing 90-95 all the way. They are from people driving Cadillacs, 3 series, e350's, mustangs, and the occasional camaro doing 75 in the left lane and don't feel the need to get over for faster Trucks. haha I cannot wait till I can pass them with 400hp instead of 350hp.

jbny 11-16-2010 01:05 PM

Just once, when i started my car in an enclosed parking lot, the guy next to me said it sounded like a muscle car and asked if i did anything to the engine..mine is 4.8is (Stock)

Penguin 11-16-2010 01:37 PM

I really don't pay much attention, but while on vacation this Summer we were stopped at Little America and as we got out of the stock Space Grey (but de-badged) X5, a couple of young guys going to their car said "Cool vehicle."

AwesomeM3 11-16-2010 02:14 PM

I get a ton of looks...I think it's because the M Sport Package makes the X5 stand out from the non-M Sports. Also, the 20" wheels are pretty unique.

Last weekend I was at the gas station and there was a guy in a black Porsche Cayenne S (Florida plates) checking out my X5. He looked just like Asante Samuel...it may have been him, I'm not sure.

tonycajjo 11-16-2010 03:33 PM

i have 4.4i e53 with the X pipe i get a lot of confused / jaw dropping looks when i get on it...
i get some questions about the width of my tires. (summer ones anyhow)
and many are impressed that there it's an '02.

Jeg Norge 11-16-2010 04:16 PM

my x5 attracts my attention every time i drive it. that's good enough for me lol

Temonio 11-16-2010 05:42 PM

Now that I have the 4.8 w/ Sport, I notice I get a lot of looks from the othe X drivers. Didn't realize all the subtle differences, but I'm loving mine.

FatX5 11-16-2010 07:22 PM

AwesomeM3 - I saw your wheels yesterday on an Msport and love them!! I got compliments on my 214's, not so much on the Msport standard 19" rim.

same here although ours is bone stock, i get compliments and comments every single time I get out of my e70..most of the time due to my age (25)

generally ranging from:
-sweet ride! so what is it that you do exactly to afford a car like that?

my general response is something you don't want to know ;)

-people staring wondering if its daddy's car.

and the best one from my friend..

"damn..i've always wanted one of them! :stickpoke when I have kids.."
go figure it was a girl whom said that..

blue dragon 11-16-2010 08:26 PM

Had nothing but compliments on the truck. Mine has the Aero kit with custom wheels so maybe thats why.

You should have replied "We could make that happen"!

I've gotten a few comments on the X5 but nothing that stood out.

Thanks! Unfortunately, I'll putting my winter set on soon, Style 210. The look so ordinary, and don't do much for the M Sport styling.

I love the front bumper of the LCI M Sport...congrats on a nice ride!:2thumbs:

You're in NJ, just switch to all season rubber and smile year-round.

I suppose I could switch to all-seasons; that's a good idea. I'll have to consider that when my tires need replacing. I didn't think 275/40ZR20 and 315/35ZR20 were available in all-seasons, but I just checked Tire Rack, and they have a few different brands. Thanks!:thumbup:

EDIT: I just saw this on Tire Rack's website:

Quote:

NOTE: While Crossover/SUV Touring All-Season light truck tires offer all-season versatility including traction in light snow, tire sizes featuring extremely wide tread widths may limit the traction this type of tire can provide in deep snow.

I had a guy come up to me at the kids daycare and say that it looked bad a$$ from behind and looked like a tank. Then he crawled back in got into his ML320. I knew those 315's were wide and looked awesome from behind, but when I had them next to my 255 Winters last night they looked friggin huge.

True, we typically don't get big snow storms here in NJ, but last year we had three biggies...15", 19" and 20". Nevertheless, I'll have to consider 20" 315's when I replace my stock tires. Thanks again for the advice! Oh, and sorry to thread jack.

mtech8 11-20-2010 10:50 AM

Get looks and compliments frequently.

But I probably stare at other X5's more than people look at mine. Love the way the X5 looks. Even enjoy looking at other stock X5's zooming around. Though my favorites are the X5M, MSport and ones that have stuff done.
