Is Dunlop Maxx really that bad in winter?
 

I had 20" rims and summer tires on my previous X5 and they were okay during winter (even through snow storms). I would say "better" than rear drive cars (Lexus IS300 with winter tires, for example).

I am considering getting 20" rims with tires since tires on my 19" are getting tired. And I wonder if MAXX really makes our X5 a 5000lb sled? Are they just worse in winter weather compare to other summer tires?

Yes. They are horrible in the winter.

I keep mine on through the winter...no problems.

I am sure that you could keep them on your car and I am sure you will be able to get to your destination. The fun will happen when you need to do an evasive maneuver because of someone else driving in the snow on summer tires looses control. haha. in 2002, I had summer 20" on my E53 and it took one OH $4!T moment to convince myself that spending the money on a dedicated winter set for all my cars/suv's was well worth the $$$. Besides in the long run you almost/do break even. I know I broke even on my 540, E53 and SL500 when it came to the cost of running summer/winter setups

Agreed. It is also not just the snow and slush, but the fact that summer rubber has reduced grip in temps around 45 degrees F and below. Even in dry conditions.

If temps dont get below about 45 too often, your summers will be just fine year round.

Just FYI-

The SIZE of the cars they use for 'comparison tests' can make a BIG difference. So unless you are shopping for 3 series tires, take the tirerack tests with a large grain of salt.

The first time I hydroplaned on my Goodyear Eagles I never ever trusted them again in the slightest bit of rain. 4 of us could've been seriously hurt on the highway that day if not for the gravel near the off-ramp.

Driving on rubber as hard as rocks in winter is not the best thing to do. Sure it'll get you there but how much do you trust them?
